Every once in a while, one crosses paths with something special. And when one does it's wise to jump on the opportunity. That's just what I did when I came upon a dam near mint F.D. Lyons 8' 3/1 4wt. I'm no photographer so let me be clear that this rod is way prettier in person than on film. She casts a DT4F well but comes alive with a Cortland "SYLK" DT5F. Full medium in taper. I'm thrilled and looking forward to getting her on the water this spring. She's a stunner! Check it out! Enjoy!
Mark

Stunning. Yes, it's hard to turn your head away from a rod like that. I am also sure it fishes well.

Just FYI. I spoke with Dwight Lyons today. He advised that the rod was built in 2010. For those curious the last four digits on his serial numbers are the month and year. For instance, the serial number on mine is F180431110. So, it was built in November of 2010.

You did very well as Dwight's rods are special to say the least. I have several and they fish as well as they look. Congrats!

What a score - the 4 weight is much harder to find on any market.

I can say, the 5 weight is a delight as well.
This one from 2008.

I agree Brian. They are tough to find. I missed a 7' 4wt. about a year or so ago and it has bugged me ever since. :) I was thrilled to cross paths with this rod.

Mine is a solid medium taper. As stated above it's better with Cortland "SYLK" DT5F than a DT4F. In close she's good and quick tiptop wise and silky smooth at distance.

On the right day - on the right water,
It's magical.

He is a swell guy too - I called and asked him a few questions.

How does the rod compare to Barclay’s 784?

The 784 is much quicker in hand and a lighter feel overall. Not as full flexing as the Lyons. Also, more forgiving. But all of that said I haven't had the Lyons rod on the water as yet. To be continued. :)
