Don't know much about the rod but it is your duty to go fish that rod.At least once in a while .Your uncle wanted you to have it and that is that.

Is it 8'? By the looks of the butt and tip, I would say you're on course with a six line.

Always helpful in a what-is-it query to give the length of the rod. Six weight is a very likely starting point for 60s run of the mill glass up to 8 feet, but 7 or 8 is about as likely from 8' on. Try this viewtopic.php?f=3&t=74790&p=414156&hilit=length+chart#p414156 Let us know.

Most of the glass rods from that era are 6,7 wt, if that is any help.

The average rod was 8 feet and cast 6,7 lines. Some of the modern lines have a more radical...heavy, fast tapers... and you can get away with 5 wt on occasion, but basically a 6wt is a good starting point.

Like others say, start with #6. I hope you fish that rod and enjoy fond memories of Uncle Bobby while you do. If he cared enough to specify that the rod came to you, it meant something to him for you to have it.

Hey Flybuddy,
I just saw your post about your uncle’s south bend..
I believe the rod you have is a
model# 1-420-280..
I’ve seen them in white , black and some brown (Cortland used a brown version of this for their Unsanded 500 series rods )
I would date your rod as mid 70s ..75/76ish with the late plastic reel seat .
Earlier rods all got metal seats but later on the budget rods had plastic seats while the higher end models like the “classic” 3,4&5 rods still received aluminum seats .
The blank that your rod is built on traces its roots back to about the mid 60s when south bend revamped from the old green and black rods from the 50s..
All new tapers and construction..
Here’s just a few models that use that master blank
The “Stag” was #32-280
The “Outdoorsman” was #1-432-280
The “Goldenrod” was #33080
The “Classic” series rods 1,2,3,4,5
These rods are smooth finished ..
Meaning the spiral tape markings were sanded off then painted . Giving a very smooth and lustrous finish..

Your rod is essentially the
Unsanded “white knight “ model #1-428-280 but with different wraps and decals .. (some early knights got the smooth blank, later were Unsanded )
White Knights got red decals black wraps
While your uncle Bobby’s rod has the red decals and blue wraps.
Which would have coincided with our nation’s bicentennial in 1976 ..
(Lot of red white and blue themed rods came out then..)

Both rods being on the same white “Unsanded” blank (ribbed tape markings left on rod then painted )

The Unsanded rods are a little more crisp actioned as they didn’t have material sanded off..
Those Unsanded rods are more of a solid 7wt vs a 6wt of the sanded versions ..

If you want to trout fish with it use a 6wt line if you wanna Bass fish throw a nice 7wt .

There’s just something so special when someone thinks enough to give you their rod!!

Good luck with your “Uncle Bobby Special”
Hope to see it in action
Try cleaning that rod with some warm water and a few Clorox or Lysol wipes.. it helps get those tape ridges cleaned off .
Hit those wraps with the wipe then give that rod a SC Johnson paste wax job .
Spiff it up a bit in Uncle Bobby’s memory…
Then fish the heck out of it !
So cool he actually left it to you in the estate .
Tight lines
Scotto

Fix it with a stent and get a new reel seat and make a new handle. There are some good discussions on this site with unapologetic use of stents or building rod extensions: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16495
