Fenwick 858 with sock and tube (missing one end cap) with a Martin Classic mc56 reel. $40 seemed decent enough for that. If the label on the rod wasn’t worn I would think it wasn’t used. Great shape. The cork has clearly been held by oily human hands but everything else is in great shape. Reel is nice too, needs a quick cleaning inside but feels great.

The rod looks good. At this point, getting the paper label off the cork is more likely to do damage. Unless the label bothers you on the water, just leave it there. Those old Fenwick cases are often missing the top cap.

That's an old line - far older than the rod and reel. Try it, but don't be surprised if the line doesn't match the rod. You want an 8 weight line on a reel that can hold it. You might fit a WF8 line onto the reel without any backing, but again, don't be surprised if the reel is too small.

Give the reel the full Bulldog1935 cleaning and it will last for another couple of decades. Great reel for a 5/6 weight rig.

Nice find, you can fish that rod with no fear and fish it hard.

Thanks for the cleaning link - I knew that was on here somewhere!

I have no idea what that line is other than old, but it’s actually in good shape. It will be replaced with an appropriate 5 or 6 weight line. I will be using a 7 or 8 with that rod. I have some medalists and cortlands that could pair well.

Great finds! I'm sure the rod will be fun to fish. Thanks to Tom, too, for the cleaning link! He is right about the Martin reel. I gave the same reel to a grandson for Christmas, it is a great match for a 5 or 6 weight rod.

I am hoping I find a nice rod or two at yard sales or thrift stores. I have found some wonderful antique double-edge razors - a Gillette Senator from the 30's for $5 was probably my best.

Get an 8wt line for that rod and you will love it.

Back in the days of my youth spent chasing salmon and steelhead, I would have give my right n,,,,,,,,,,,,uckle for that rod, used to drool over those!!

Fished one today, for bass, only for an hour or so but it did not feel like it was going to wear out my arm. Had fun with it.

If that same $40 was spent on eBay - you would pay shipping on it all for another $40.
You would only get one of those items - not both.
When it arrived, the item would be broken.

This way - no shipping - firsthand inspection done at point of purchase - both a rod and reel for $40.

Glad to see both pieces of vintage equipment have laded into good hands. Fish hard and free.

Great score !!
There is just something super cool about finding rods “in the wild” VS online/eBay ..
Yard sales, flea markets , antique , thrift and pawn shops are so much fun !!
You just never know what gold you may dig up..
Found my Beloved Fenwick FF806 in a pawn shop 5 years ago..

That same pawn shop has an Orvis Bamboo rod I’m gonna go check out this weekend.

Keep diggin up that OLE Gold !!!

The majority of my rods and reels are “finds”. It’s just fun and leads to an eclectic mix. Only brand new purchase was my first fly rod/reel (and even that I got for cheap) and an emergency buy of a Remington classic trout rod when that first rod snapped about 5 minutes into a weekend trip.

Right after this one I got a Wright & McGill Granger Victory bamboo rod, all original and in good shape for $20 from an estate sale.

Biggest challenge is deciding when and which rod/reel to use!
