There are two ********* Western Glass rods for sale. Both 8'6" 4 and 5 wt.

I'm not really trying to find a niche for this rod but the price is right and I've wanted to try one of Dusty's rods for awhile.

I have a 7'2" Scott 4wt, a 7'9" Barclay GP 4/5, a 8' 4/5 Steffen (I fish the GP as a 4 and the Steffen as a 5...well, haven't actually fished either, but that's my plan) and a 8'6" Epic 686...so my bases are covered.

If you only had funds for one, which would you get?

The 4 would give more separation from your other rods. But would it be less useful for your fishing?

I'm thinking the 'long' 5 would be more relevant for fishing in your part of the country (I'm assuming light bassin' and panfish)

WJude, on this forum, let me fish an 864 and an 865 a few years ago when my brother and I were up his way. You can't really go wrong with either one depending on what you want to do. I fished dries and dry/dropper rigs with both.

Not sure where you are since you posted the thin the herd topic, but I think a long 5 would be more useful for what I saw then, especially for out West. I have both rods, and you won't go wrong with either.

So much for thinning the herd!

I’d vote for the 865. I’m sure the 864 is a fun rod, but you have some really nice options in 4wt. I could see myself using the ********* 865 lots of places where the Steffen 4/5 is too light and the Epic 686 is too strong. Or if you’re rigging two rods for a float, I’d have the ********* 865 rigged as a dry/dry dropper rod and the Epic 686 ready with a big ol streamer.

I have the 5 and it’s my go-to for dry-dropper fishing. I’ve also caught little fish on dries with it. Still fun. That’s my vote…

flip a coin and pull the trigger. The 5wt might be more "practical" but the 4wt would probably be more fun.

Just thin out one more rod and get both. You'll really appreciate catching fish on the 4wt when appropriate, and equally enjoy fishing the 5wt otherwise.
