Just got a new rod today. It’s a sage fiberglass model B679-4SFS. It appears to me to be towards the end of the short run of fiberglass that sage did, perhaps 1985? Any way it’s a nicely done blank build. I put it together today but didn’t cast. feels muscular but not heavy just like the other sage glass I’ve owned. I can’t wait to get it on the water.

I couldn’t find much info on this model. It’s not listed on the wiki. Anyone know anything about it?? Pics below:

I have the 3 piece B679-3SFL that I built from a blank many years ago. For me, mine is a solid 6wt but will handle a 5 wt too. Very nice casting rods in my opinion.

I wonder what the different letters at the end mean (sfs vs sfl)?

Did not know the Sage fiberglass rods were made other than the 2-piece configurations.
Never heard of a 4-piece 6wt. Nice find!

This must be a pretty rare blank! Never heard about it, either.

May it be a combination FlySpin blank? Built out as a flyrod? The four piece configuration may reinforce this assumption.

SFS - S-glass : Fly : Spin, would be in line with the code breaking in this thread:

Congratulations! I wish I can find one of those some day...

MrJesse34: Your rod is built on a 7'6" blank (B676-4SFS) rather than the 7'9" fly blank (B679SFL or B679-3SFL).

Not completely sure, but I think Fario is spot on with the assumption that this was sold as a Fly/Spin blank. Somewhere there is most likely a factory-built version out there, although I have never seen it.

Great find and enjoy the rod!

FYI I fished this for the first time the other day. Used 5wt line for it and did some nymphing. It cast nicely, and had enough backbone for one real big rainbow I caught out of nowhere. Its a rod I'm definitely going to keep because of its shortness - it will travel well.

Thanks for the feedback, Mr Jesse34, and great that it worked well for you!
I'm very curious of the impression you got regarding the action. Was it fast/slow, did it bend about 1/3 down, 1/2 or was it bending into the cork?

I have a B580 in addition to this rod. To me, the B580 bends further down than the B679. I have NOT cast the B679 rod in a place that allowed me to max it out - just roll casting with an indicator and double nymph rig. For what its worth, the B580 is the furthest casting rod I have in my arsenal in a 4/5/6 weight size. It can cast a country mile.

I do think its possible the B679-4SFS was originally a spin / fly blank. It being a bit stiffer and stronger, as well as shorter for a 6wt point to that. Whoever built the blank out made it a fly only.

More to come!

Sage customer service has been a great help in the past for me.
I’d give them a call. I think the B prefix means it was made in 82’ but not positive.

B means it's a blank so custom build.

Thank you Novisor, maybe I was thinking of the serial number.
First year production was A and so on. Don’t know when they stopped that. Visible with a flashlight on the early rods I’ve seen.
