Just picked this rod up and like it quite a bit. Don't hear much about this model here, is it less loved than many other Phillipsons.

I put a 5wt 444 Peach on it and loads great with that if you have thirty or thirty-five feet of line out. Getting the feeling for in closer it is closer to being a 6 weight like written on the rod. What lines are others using on this rod?

Any thoughts (good or bad) on these model rods appreciated.

Barry

I have three of the Phillipson Master MF70 7ft 6wt rods which, I believe (& please correct me if I’m wrong) are very very similar.

I like it best with a WF6 or Teeny BS-100 or T-130 for streamers and roll-casting.

(* see Bulldog’s multitude of old posts on this)

Kelly is right, the Johnson Series 800 were the first Scotchply rods that Phillipson made - they became the Master, Deluxe, Royal after Bill bought the company back.
Great configuration - Phillipson's best, IMO.
That's a nicely appointed rod - desirable to both fish and look at.

Johnson (1962 to 1964) had three grades of Phillipson rods: 800 uniglas, 600 uniglass, and 400 eponite glass. The 800 series was the top of the line with gold plated guides and fittings and a matching painted nickle-silver ferrule. The 600 had standard Phillipson guides, and the 400 was the economy series with standard eponite blanks, and not uniglas. All three were magnificent performers.

I have an 8' 600 uniglas with Phillipson standard guides and painted ferrule, that is labeled for an 8 weight line, but will handle both a #7, or a #9 line. I think the rod performs best with a #9 line, actually.

When Phillipson regained the company, he kept with Scotchply, and retained the eponite for his master series. Eventually he went to Scotch epoxite, and the rest is history.

Nice rod!

Thanks for the history lesson guys, this is great information.

Any idea, would this Beans rod be Scotchply or Eponite?

Thanks,
Barry

The Bean's LL is definitely Scotchply - it's a Phillipson Master

I almost bought both of those rods you posted…
Lucky for you I’m out here buying rods that already belonged to you years ago like this ll bean that was yours I believe

Lol :P
Those profile 800 series rods are beautifully appointed.
I love the double spiral guides and the spiral trimmed wraps

I had mine spiffed up by my local rod builder and had the cork refreshed ,few wraps and hossel repaired.
Then had them “low build” epoxied in place .
Turned out stellar .
Rod should be good as an heirloom to my sons well after I’m gone… or for another 50 years whichever comes first lol :lol

The profile 8F’s are arguably one of the prettiest Phillipsons ..?

That is until you lay you eyes on a minty old school Eponite Royal .

The older dressed down X80 is a looker too..

Bloodhound was dumb enough to sell
His x80 to my wife . Just joking :)
(He probably regrets selling it)

Glad that these two scotchply rods went to you
You’ve got 2 well regarded and highly sought after small Phillipson’s there .
A 7ft profile 800 is a straight unicorn!!
Same for the lil 6.5ft beans featherlight especially in that pristine of condition..
Good score …

Hope you get them back on the water where they belong!

Yup, I think I sold a couple of those LL Bean
rods to carlz many years ago. Seem to remember they were new and I don't think I ever even cast them.

I miss going to the shows up north. So much great fly fishing gear shows up.

Yes, "...dumb enough..." is correct. I had the full set, X76, X80, & X86. I kept the X76 and the X86, thinking that I likely wouldn't use the X80 so I listed it on the auction site. I am just so glad that it went to a fellow Phillipson fan and bonus someone from this site. I am a huge fan of the old Eponite rods with my main love being the X rods...I always keep my eyes open for the X-- markings and the "Butterscotch" Swirl of the blank...

Those are great looking rods! I have seen a couple online in my search for Phillipsons recently. Also came across an x80 that I'm trying to pick up. All very nice looking rods. Thanks for posting.
