This is a new rod for me. 8ft 4 1/4oz Beans LL. Help with the maker would be appreciated. I’m still pretty green where Phillipsons are concerned

That rod was made by Phillipson. That grip style and reelseat hardware were unique to them. Check the Phillipson catalog thread pinned to the top of this forum, particularly the 1968 and 1969 catalogs.

The 8 foot rod is usually a 6/7 weight, but there was a 'light' version made for a 5 weight line. Try different lines and use the one you like best.

Thanks for the response. I looked in the rod papers. Looks like the master from 68 or 69. What a great resource.

That's a pretty powerful rod.
My (uncatalogued) E80 from '71 or '72, marked 6-wt, is my go-to white bass rod for long casts and bottom-bouncing a T130.
What you have there would make a great bass rod or any big water rod with a WF7.

Ron, is that E80 the Epoxite rod with a fiberglass ferrule and a metal ferrule ring? If so, I think I've got essentially a rod built on the same blank, which is a chocolate brown color. It's a Farlow Sharpe Gold Band rod, which is 8'0" and marked as a 6-weight. I haven't yet worked out which line is best for it.

Hi Pete, no my rod was made at the same time Bill was working on spigot ferrules, though it has metal ferrules, and precedes epoxite by a year.
It was the last model he designed before selling the company to 3M, and it was never catalogued.

I’ve the same rod as the op, although his appears to be in better condition than mine, which was obviously well used but well by whomever had it before I. Much mojo and since rewrapped.

Perfect rod for the Texas Hill Country. Easy to cast, will roll cast way farther than you might expect. I use mine as a 6 wt, T130 to get down. You’ve a keeper.

1972. 3M ran Phillipson for a year or two, but then closed the operation in 1974. Rick's Rods in Denver now owns the Phillipson trademark and a large supply of the old stock rod building parts and blanks.
