I have a Phillipson G-MF66 with metal ferrules. First question, are these ferrules nickel silver? Second, is there any major difference in how this model casts compared to the models with spigot ferrules? What other differences in models that would give preference to one over the other?

Thanks,
Barry

Really surprised Ron has not piped up. The ferrules are nickel silver. The models with glass ferrules feel softer actioned to me.

That is really nice rod. How does it cast?

Haven't had on the water yet, but pretty nice in the backyard. Seems to work fine if I slow down my casting stroke.

You might feel the metal ferrules a little at first or just a slight change in action.I fish a 7' Fly Fox as well as a couple browning sila 's with tip over ferrules but also shorter wonderods and they are all about equal in basic feel. The metal ferrules on the WRs felt a little stiff at first but i don't notice it anymore.I have a Cabela's prime 6' 3wt that is 1 piece and is the most fun to cast rod i have ever owned.

So how does someone recognize "nickle silver" from "just another" metal ferrule?
It's a question I've never really considered, i have a number of metal ferruled rods and like them all, but never wondered what the metal was.

The metal ferruled Master rods we're designed very well so while you might be able to tell there is a bit of a stiff spot there, the whole rod was designed with that in mind and there are no issues. I think I like the metal ferrule a bit more in the scotch-ply era blanks.

What more can you pull out of your storage unit Barry?

I'm working on it. Truly don't know what's in there anymore. Actually, was just out in garage and found a bunch of bamboo in tubes that I haven't seen in about three or four years.

Carl, I'm willing to bet you have many great rods you haven't seen in a while. I seem to remember watching you buy a few at shows in the distant past.

What was that last one, not sure, was it a Silaflex off of Kuma Kiri? I remember sitting there talking to him all day and you walked over and picked up some sweet rod I hadn't even noticed.

Just found this thread, Curtis is correct, except for my RW66, the tipover Phillipsons are slightly softer than the metal ferrule.
Nickel-silver ferrules.
My first MF66 was a joy, though I sold it when the market was good.
Was very happy to be able to finally replace it with RW66.

If I recall, the 6'6" with spigots is generally considered to be one of the early 4 weights whereas your metal ferrule model is identified as a 6 weight. I had one of the 6'6" spigot models and it was indeed a lighter wt. than 6 wt. I was happy with it with a 4 wt. line with it. It has been one of my favorite rods. It was light and full flexing. I think the one I had was called epoxite whereas yours is eponite? A different material anyway.

I have a 6 footer like yours with the metal ferrule (MF-60) and it is labeled a 6 wt. I use a 5 & 6 with it.

I have two red 7 foot spigot ferrule models, one which prefers a 5 wt line and one a 6 wt line, at least for me. The 6 wt. 7 foot spigot ferrule rod is a great rod--very full flexing in my opinion.

Barry,
That rod I picked up was a Heddon Thoroughbred 8' rod, which I have since sold. It's one of the vintage rods I have a bit of regret selling, but I just don't fish my vintage 5wt's much and it's better that it is in the hands of someone who will fish it.

I still have the LL-Bean 8' and 8'6" rods I purchased from you. Though either those or some of my FR-2000 rods will probably be sold soon as they are almost identical.
