Hi,
I’m hoping someone may recognize the maker of a vintage rod that I just purchased. Rod is 6’8” in length, dark brown, with what appears to be an aluminum reel seat. The rod casts a 6DT well. The only mark is in the photo.
Thanks for any info

Photos of the rest of the rod, such as grip, reelseat, ferrules, and wraps might help to ID the rod as much or more than the scrap of label. Are the two rod sections the same length? A 6'8" rod is an unusual dimension.

I might be mistaken, but didn’t Horrocks & Ibbotson make a 6’8” fly rod with a ‘tobacco’ blank ?

The rod has two sections. With the odd length I thought originally it might have been as a result of a broken tip, but it doesn’t appear to bo be repaired. Here are the photos.

I believe it is a Montague Holloglass. There are remnants of the Montague decal. Also, the reel seat looks like it was made by Montague. Both sections were originally the same length. You can see the ferrule wrap is missing from the butt section so the ferrule has been reglued over the short section. Still, since you like the way it casts, fish it!

Thanks for the info. As I mentioned I picked up the rod to use in learning rod restoration. I will post photos as I progress.

The coarse threads on the reel seat lock look more like the South Bend example on this presentation, than any other reel seat displayed.

By the '60s, South Bend was Gladding, which also incorporated H-I.
The label is very different from rectangular and blocky SB style.

Not ruling out Montague, and the remnant of the label looks very much like their model badges.
Montague was bought by True Temper and moved to SC two years after they began offering glass rods (one year after they began making their own blanks).

I agree the remnant label does look Montague and the seat looks a bit like the one shown viewtopic.php?f=3&t=72695#p400310

I would bet on that rod being a Montague Holloglass. Not sure about the ferrules, but the blank, seat, grip, stripper guide, all fit. I also think the reel seat is the same as one marked for a Sewell Dunton rod in that view topic posted by Ron. Dunton bought up the Montague bamboo works after it closed and used all kinds of spare parts and blanks from them.
