Once again you guys are causing me to spend money … If you had to choose one of these three rods for fishing in tight quarters with limited back cast room and some canopy on small rivers/creeks/streams in warm water … would you go for 1) Phillipson G-MF60C 2) Fenwick 72-6 yellow two piece or … 3) Fenwick FF 605

I have scoured the forum for days researching and cannot make up my mind. I need your help!

I understand the short rod need/want. Shortest I have is a couple 6'6" Orvis Deluxe's (cane) and a 6'6" LL Bean (Phillipson) glass. I have arrived at an undeniable love for a 7' cane or glass rod - short enough, great with smaller and larger fish, better than average roll caster. I have 3 FF705's and an FF70. In my opinion the FF705 is the best all-around short glass taper for smaller bass flies and bluegill poppers ever. Cobbling together a Dennis Stone blank (cane) based on the Dickerson 7012 sped up a bit for dry fly use - hoping it will handle a WF5 for Hopper use.
Have a 7' Phillipson Royal 6 wt. on the way.... oh man I'm sick, at least maybe so... :\

I have a 6'6" Cortland FR-2000 5wt that I got for the same reasons you are looking for a short rod. I don't use it much, but it has performed beautifully when I have used it. Handles pretty much any sized trout or smallish bass fly I would ever use. I have a pretty small warmwater creek nearby that has a lot of tight canopy over it. I have had plans to get over there the past couple of summers but so far have not done so. I think this rod would be perfect for it...
When I have had 6' rods in the past they just seemed a little too short for my liking, but that is just my opinion. I think any of the rod options you mentioned would work great. Never met a Phillipson or Fenwick rod I didn't like.

The Phillipson MF60C is a bit more tip heavy than the Fenwicks and thus roll casts a little better. Your description implies you will be roll casting quite a bit.

I've had a bunch of 6' Fenwicks and prefer the 2oz versions with the sliding band reel seats. Great little rods.

On the other hand I think the 6'3" Para/Metrics and short Phillipsons are better casting rods for me.

Of course if money is no object give me a short Orvis Golden Eagle every day.

I'm sure some of the modern rods are wonderful, but I have never owned one.

Thanks guys, great advice as always! Tom you are correct, it will be a lot of roll casting. It is nasty back in there but I know there are some big fish waiting to be caught. I had my 7’6 EC Crafted Glass back in there a few weeks ago when I was scouting it out and it was just a little too long to use in the stretch I was working.

The Phillipson roll-casts a Lot better than the FF605.
I agree most 7' rods including the FF705 are choice.

I've owned both the Fenwick 605 and Phillipson G-MF60C, sold the fenwick 605. The G-MF60C rollcast best. Never cast the Fenwick 72-6,

I have to agree on the short phillipsons being great rollcasters.I frequently fish some areas with no backcast possible. My favorite all around rod for bush wacking and pond fishing is a 6' browning silaflex. Will be giving it a workout Monday on a stocked lake with nothing but brush,i have it overlined with a 6wt bass bug taper to load short.I will also bring my 7' fly fox for some nearly impossible, for me any way, rollcasting and sideways water loading to fish an area that these stocked fish like to congregate. It is always a surprise to see what they stock.Last 2 years has been brook trout, some years it has been giant rainbows with a few golden trout mixed in.I had a acouple shorter fenwicks but they did not rollcast well for me.The phillipson makes me look like i know what i am doing.
