Took a break from working in the yard to look at a rod for sale. OK - Fenwick type tube with no markings, not a typical Fenwick bag but what's in it....

Nice clean cork - good reel seat, no scratches. Wraps are clean with light varnish, brown with dark brown/black trim bands.

Unusual stripping guide.

OK - now it's comin' home with me!

Nice. Some of my rods are in disguise, based on the tube.
Let us know how it fishes.

How interesting. I wonder how a fenwick tube, sage glass, and random sock all came to meet each other.

Sage quit offering glass in 1990, and I would say your rod is from that final decade.

Nice find!

The model number begins with a 'B', so the rod was built up from a blank. The builder did a very nice job. Apparently they used a tube they had on hand.

If the tube had 'Sage' painted on the side, an antique dealer would have grabbed it early and put it on eBay for $800. I'm glad you got it instead.

I've got the SFL580 and would love to try the step down.

The unusual stripping guide may be a REC agate - nice components all around. Congratulations!

Wow, what a great find. My first fly rod came in a Fenwick tri-angle tube marked FF806...but the Rod was a Lews Graphite...the seller told me he just wanted a tube to protect the newer rod.

Congrats on the new old SAGE

Thanks guys - a lucky day for me. I was listing an item for sale on CL and, fortunately, decided to peruse the fishing gear. The amazing thing to me was this rod was on CL for 6 days when I replied. The rod label was clearly shown in the add. I was just kinda stringing things along in my post for fun.

the seller said he had lots of inquiries but no commitment to buy. He didn't seem to be a fisherman. I asked him how he came across this rod and he said he just likes to buy things and resell them on CL, didn't know or volunteer any info on the rod but I would like to know who built it cause they did a really good job of it.

Plan to fish it this week and hope to catch the tail end of the periodical cicadas. might be a big job for a 4 wt to push a big foam fly but what the heck. As Bulldog mentioned this is likely from the 80s and I did make up a Sage GFL 476 back then that I broke on a big brown in central PA - so even though this rod is glass it is kinda taking me back in time.

I dont think it's an agate stripping guide. I can't tell from looking but it looks like one with a shock ring and ceramic inserts similar to early Scott Gs. The Scott's had a red shock ring with a ceramic insert.

2nd pic down on this link:

(Even though the author states the stripping guide is agate, he is incorrect).

Thanks Norvisor - the stripping guide has a red outer ring and gray inner ring just like your reference article.

I’ve one, you’ll find it on the fast side for glass. Very capable, accurate rod. Enjoy it!
