Hi everyone, I have a older hardy fly rod & reel in excellent shape. The reel is still in original box and the rod still has original plastic on cork handle. Any information I can find would be great and maybe a value on the rod and reel. I can take better pictures if need be .

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

We have nothing to go on. Hardy made hundreds of different rods and reels. How long is the fly rod? How many pieces? What information is written on the rod and reel and the reel box?

Photos always help to identify a piece of equipment and the condition. Instructions for posting photos can be found here.

Sorry I though I added the picture, the rod is 7 1/2 feet and is a two piece rod

So the easiest thing you can do is note down all the writing on the rod and provide that in your question. For example, this rod says “JET”, “D/C”, “#5”, and “7 1/2’”.

So it’s a 7 1/2’ 5wt Hardy JET. The D/C means it was built in April 1973 (see this link for serial number info: http://splitcane.czweb.org/downloads/hardy_rod_dates.pdf).

You can go to ebay and search “completed”/“sold” auctions to get an idea of what people pay for rods like this.

If you fire up Google and eBay and put in Hardy Viscount, you can find all kinds of info as well....

The rod is a really nice light trout rod: they were once referred to as "brook rods", as if they were not "proper" rods for chalkstreams (which, as Hardy's customers at that time knew, were 8ft or 9ft 6-7 weights)!

That length/weight is significantly less common than the majority of JETs (and the later Fibalites) that were sold, so tends to sell quite well, certainly here in the UK.

I cannot be as positive about the reel: I had one of those, and it was Hardy's entry-level product. Enough said...

It will, however, balance the rod very well.

A desirable glass rod - probably built in the rod factory that Joe Fisher shipped from California to Alnwick - and a decent matching reel - great combo - thanks for adding the photos.

Nice rod, fairly fast and powerful five weight. I would say worth about $200 - $300 Canadian. Reel is functional but nothing to get excited about worth $80 to $110 Canadian. Perfectly functional and versatile outfit for brook trout fishing. I would remove plastic from the cork - water can get under it and rot the cork.
At the time, in Canada these rods were just a little more expensive than the Fenwicks.

I don’t know much about it, but it looks like a really nice rod.

Thanks for the help everyone. I want to head out to go fishing but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t something worth a ton of money to learn on lol

Yes, that's a neat combo. It has the color of a Fisher rod made for Hardy. The photos dont show the ferrule clearly but I think I can see that it is spigot ferruled, which would also suggest Fisher. Their light trout fiberglass rods made for Hardy, Scientific Angler and others (under 8', #4 or #5) are highly regarded. The real is perfectly adequate for that rod and the type of fishing to be done with it. No reason not to use that reel in my opinion but definitely save the box.

Yes. I gotta say, that is a fine outfit. It won't send a kid to college, but it will never owe you anything either. In terms of fishing and the estimated values mentioned, it will be worth much more than many new outfits that cost three or four times as much.

If the wraps look good and it feels right when assembled, fish it! And take a few pics to share...
