Hello,

Although I have a few short rods, including a modern lo-fli 4 piece 6’6”, which is excellent, I want to find a few vintage short rods while they are still available.

I know about the 6 and 7 foot fenwick rods. I am interested in rods that cast 5 wt and 6 wt lines.

Thank you

If you find Phillipson rods 7' and under, you're apt to sell your Fenwicks.
Berkley/Gowdy 6'3" Para/metric is a pocket rocket.
St. Croix Imperial 7090, 6'8" is light and crisp with a 4- or 5-wt.

Wonderod Model FY-910 UL-----922-----929

New and cheap: Eagle Claw Featherlite 6'6" or 7'

The earlier Scott and Winston rods are the cream of the crop, not cheap, but worth every penny, and as good or better than anything made today.

You can go to the WIKI and look at each manufacturer's page there, some pages are better than others, but it is a starting place- https://wiki.fiberglassflyrodders.com/wiki/Main_Page

To add: The Garcia 7'0" #6 "5-star", and the "Lee Wulff" model 7'-0" #6 are both excellent. (both with metal male spigot ferrules, and "quadrate" cork grips...)

Early Winston is one. The other may be Walt Carpenter. The true and original Silaflex as well.

I had the Herter's-branded 6'8" rod and it was a lot closer to a six weight than a four weight for sure. Really a great, little rod, but I had no use for a short six weight. It is ridiculously light for a six weight!

Shakespeare made the “Panfish Special” in 6’6” and 7’ lengths with the number 1245 and 922. They are 6 wts. The FY-910UL was also made in the same two lengths. They are 5 wts and all of these are fine rods.

I have a 7’ 5/6wt LLBean pack rod ca. late 1980’s - made for Bean by Timberline Rod Co from a Lamiglas blank. It’s great. Recommend those from either Bean or Timberline.

The 2636-A model Garcia Conolon is 7'3" and although rated as a 5wt, is almost a 4, certainly not a 6. Be carefully though, as some of the 2636 models with other alpha suffixes are totally different heavier action rods. I think the 2636 with no alpha suffix is similar to the "-A" but I'm not 100% sure.

The Berkley Stream Specialist 6’3” 4 wt, and the 7’ 5 wt are great rods. In a lesser category there is. 6’6” Wonderod.

And I have a six foot, 5 weight 3 piece Sceptre, only one I’ve ever seen. Amazing rod, great for small streams that may hold big fish.

In midweight lines, the Conolons are one of the progenitors of the type in fiberglass, championed by Lee Wulff and Charlie Ritz, quite a promo team. I can't say if they have high collector value, but if nothing else, they are from a time that might be interesting to read up on. Here is a thread that came up with a haphazard search; there are many more to turn up; some will be more focused on the short rods. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=64914&hilit=Wulff+Conolon

The phillipson arrived today and is a great rod. The Martin tuna can will be attached for some casting tomorrow.

There is a short vintage ‘glass fly rod that I’ve been on the lookout for some time now, but it never seems to come up anywhere.

When I first got really interested in fly fishing was around 1970, and there was a small trout stream right across the road from our house, after walking a couple hundred yards through the woods and a pasture. So the rod I bought for it, which was probably the first one I ever purchased, was a brown Garcia 6 ½ footer for a five-weight. If memory serves me correctly it still had metal ferrules. Does that seem familiar to anyone?
