I just purchased this fly rod today and I'm stumped on who made it? It is a 9'4" Lake King and says Space Age Boron F6 9 on it. This is a 2 piece rod and I can't find any info on this fly rod. Any help would be appreciated.

No help here, other than to say the wraps look heavier than normal...

Thanks for posting, hopefully somebody knows something

I don't know the Lake King brand name, but 'Space Age Boron' refers to boron fiber, rather than graphite or fiberglass. Browning Silaflex made boron fiber rods with brown blanks, but so did other makers. In general, boron rods were fast casters. I don't mean a predominantly tip-flex action, but fast as in the line whistles as it goes by your ear. Wear a good hat to protect your ears from wayward casts...

Given the markings, maybe try a 6 weight line. The Browning boron rods were marked with 2-3 line weights, so perhaps try a 7 or 8 weight line as well.

Lake King Rod Co. was founded in Topeka, KS in 1962. The company originally produced fiberglass rods, but over the years as imports increased, Lake King found their profits dropping considerably. Lake King changed its product line from fiberglass to graphite, and subsequently boron in order to target the middle-to-upper end of the market. I could find no further information on the company after 1981. I remember seeing some casting or spinning rods made by Lake King, but I don't recall ever seeing any fly rods. I don't think they are still in business.

Following up on Larry's post I dug a little, Glen E. Thurber, who ran Lake King Rods also had Arrow Dynamics of Topeka making patented archery shafts, golf shafts, billiard cues etc. retired in 2010 and passed in 2012, but someone is apparently still running the archery side as nitrostinger.com.
