Sage SFL686.....

A few days ago in the topic "The Art of Lawn Casting" I mentioned I had been helping a friend go through his rod collection. Two days ago I tried to open a rod tube, but the zipper was stuck. I tossed it aside and forgot about until today. This time I finally broke the zipper loose and pulled out a near mint Sage SFL686. Of course we had to put on a reel with WF6 line and go outside to cast it. With 10 feet of line out the tip this rod would cast accurately and smoothly but seemed to have the power to shoot a line to the horizon. Sage really had it worked out beautifully back in those days.

My friend Charlie is trying to figure out what to do with all his rods as his health doesn't really allow him to fish much anymore. He finds it very hard to let go of any his rods, but he is wondering what the value of this might be.

Sage glass rods are like chicken's teeth. So few of them are on the market it is impossible to give a typical price. I've seen them sell up to the low 4 figures (it was a new old stock SFL 580). A well loved, but undamaged, Sage SFL 686 recently sold on eBay for $150 (someone got a good deal). The SFL 476 would probably get a higher price due to the line weight. So between $150 and $1000, depending on the rod model and the condition.

Search Ebay for current listings and for sold listings.

thanks for posting these pics, it's a good-looking rod. Way out of my budget but maybe one day I'll find a blank..

I think $300 would achieve a fairly quick sale. Over that you really have to find a collector who really wants the rod. But there may be plenty - who knows?

Even if we don't have that many rods, we will be in a similar situation one day. And if we don't have that many rods, we have that many something elses. The value, the rarer the more so, depends on timing and market and eagerness to sell. Just as with stocks, you can't go back to a price of a week ago or a month or a year, and you can't go by any one owner's statement that "I wouldn't take less than XYZ for it." That inflated XYZ price is probably why it hasn't been sold--or he doesn't want to sell it.

With that much stuff, someone first has to decide how eager/promptly he wants to sell. Prioritize and market accordingly. Not very eager, set high prices. Need the money yesterday, call a specialist for a lot purchase. Selective sequence, set middling prices and take it as it comes. Want it to be appreciated, offer it selectively to friends or fellow enthusiasts at a bargain price. And so on.

Wait forever, let the heirs give them away.

You get your money's worth about anywhere in this range, and you can't second guess or look at how much it was worth when sold at some other time with a different purpose.

Ebay--limiting oneself to good photographs and accurate description in a clear listing with a moderate starting price--splits the difference and let's the market decide the value on any one day. Gradually listing unneeded (and unwanted by family) stuff is a fun retirement project. As a member here with more than 25 posts, you have access to the "Buying and Selling . . ." forum with lots of good strategic tips.

But remember, sometimes you just have to get rid of stuff. Someone buys it cheap, and their own sales at a higher price later are their payment for helping dispose of it.

I've been selling rods recently and you can't really tell what the value is on these collectable rods. If you look at ebay prices, you also have to figure out the time of dealing with the ebay crowd and the cut that paypal and ebay charge. I would just move them now. don't try to get the best price, just move them so you can get the cash out and let someone else enjoy the rod.

My guess for that rod is $220 will go quickly. $350 will sit for a long time. It is a gem of a rod. Does it have the original tube?

It has the original tube and sock. Charlie is always wanting the maximum possible price, but I have told him there are a lot of variables in the rod market, including which season, length and weight of rod, etc. I saw a glass Sage on Ebay asking a Buy It Now price of $685. He perked up at that, but I told him I thought the price was probably quite a bit optimistic, and the seller was also asking for best offer.

Larry

P.S. - I misspoke above. The rod was in an old Clear Creek tube without a sock.

That rod has been posted for a month or more with no hits. Also desirable 3pc. A 9wt was listed recently for under 300 and it hasn't flown off the shelf. I think everything is down in price right now. If it was a shorter rod you could probably find a taker at a higher price. I had the 7wt for a while. very nice casting rod, powerfull, but very tip heavy for me. sometimes I wish I had kept it. I had one of my best auction scores with a new sfl 3pc blank but it arrived in 4 pieces. Man I still think back about that.

More pertinent, a 686 built from a blank sold for $202 on eBay in early October. I figure a raw blank or blank built by an amateur will sell for 50-70% of what a factory build would sell for. The Sage SFLs were understated, lovely looking glass. I don't think any of their graphite has the same visual appeal (not like I'm biased...)

tl;dr Carlz nailed the price range.

JGE is right on the money here as usual. Thought I would toss in my 2c. I have the SFL580 and I had the 686 for a short time. Both were blank built rods, not factory. I sold the 686 on Ebay last month for $236. It was an amateur built blank. what you have there is a factory built rod. I've seen them selling for over 600 on ebay recently. I don't know that you can actually get that for your rod though. I would think you could get 300-400 for that stick, in mint condition and factory built with rod tube.

As you said, if you have a use for 686 its a CANNON. It was just too much for what I needed. The 580 fits my needs way better. I use it with nymph rigs with an indicator, even. And for dries, it can cast a mile very very accurately. My local water in NJ is small but I had it up in the Catskills on bigger water and I was routinely casting across the river, to spots I could never reach with my graphite rods. It is my longest casting glass rod currently, and I'm deep down the fiberglass rabbit hole at this point.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Considering it has the original Sage sock and plastic tube and if they are in "as new" condition as is the rod, $400 wouldn't be out of line.
If you can't get that and there is no rush to sell, keep it. It will only go up in value.

I had that rod, built from a blank, and I sold it for $285.

I have the blank version in my rebuild queue and Jessie is right - it is a canon. Faster than my Epic 686 and more progressive.
