I am the happy new owner of a Wonderod FY-920, due to SARC's cleaning out of the rod closet. Thank you, Nathan. It is just like the one I have had for lo these many years, and is as nice a rod for WNC as I have used. In the photos I have matched it with one of my Martins, the MC56 Classic. It makes a nicely balanced outfit. The next destination for this rod and reel is for one of our grandson's birthdays (who is just the right age), along with a box of flies and his great-granddad's fly vest. Keeping the love of the game going for another generation.
Now, about those other grandkids... :hat

Paramount51, in the Shakespeare list, it looks like the only difference is the 929 is the Trout taper and the FY-920 is the Standard taper. I don't know enough about Shakespeare's different tapers to know what the differences are. What is the action or feel of the Trout taper?

Walt,

I not sure what the difference in tapers is either. The only other difference I see between the 2 from the Shakespeare site, http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbworks.com/ ... hakespeare is the line size designation. Bruce

Bruce, the hunt continues. Maybe one of our fellow forum members know the difference between the Trout action/taper and the Standard action. More research!
Thanks,
Walt

The 929 was cataloged from 1962-1965. The FY920 was first cataloged in 1966. The catalog descriptions and prices of the two rods are nearly identical.

The OPs FY920 rod has a date code of June 1965, so it was produced as the 1966 catalog was being prepared.

Look through the Shakespeare Catalog thread pinned to the top of this forum. The early catalogs describe Trout action as 'lighter' than the Bass action. We would describe it as a 6 weight vs. a 7 weight rod. The Standard/Action/Kwik/Omni tapers came later in the mid-60s catalogs. I think these were supposed to represent what we might call the progression of slow to fast.

Tom, thanks! That is good info. I'll enjoy looking through the catalog thread.

I believe i have both ,packed away at the moment.I believe one has a slightly thicker bottom half but the tip sections are identical.Just looked at 2 7' wonderods not packed away for winter,923 professional and a purist which is a little hard to read.Blanks appear indentical wraps and hardware on the 923 is bergundy ,Purist is silver gray. The 923 has nicer fatter cork. Both rods are in excellent plus shape.I will weigh both rods and measure tip and butt dia but to the eye side by side they appear the same. The 6.5' rods have the difference in butt dia.I have 2 910ul professional and the other one i will have to find.
