I just won an FF705 with a winning bid of $105.01. It is in excellent condition, labeled 3 ounce. My son has one labeled 2 5/8 ounce. Has anyone ever casted these side by side? If so, do they feel the same? Eventually I will find out for myself, just looking for opinions.

Don't know but great score - I followed that auction and was surprised the rod didn't go for at least $20-30 more, even without the original tube.

Fenwick changed the weight just to mess with our heads.

Seriously, most of that was marketing. I had two 807's that were waaay different weights on the rod shaft anyway, but that was not the case when you actually weighed them.

Let us know!

jhusky, it does have the original tube. Perhaps you are thinking of another rod. If you look on ebay under FF705's Sold, you will see it.

My mistake, and even more surprising then.

I had to christen it this morning. I have hand surgery tomorrow so I won't be able to fish for a while. I fished it with a Cortland 444SL WF4F, and it performed flawlessly. I fished a small stream that has wild browns. Most of them on the small side, but I caught 16 in about 1 1/2 hours.

One more thing: the rod doesn't have a single scratch or ding.

Ill say this. Ive owned nearly every Vintage Fenwick in the smaller weights and lengths at one time or another.
Still have 2 customs i wont part with.

One of the greatest factory line ups ever.
I personally like the 7'-7'6 5wts and 5/6wts.
Just lovely to fish and feel right.

I do prefer the downlocking models though. But all of them are good.

All of my other Fenwick's are down locking. My new one is up locking. Almost all of my other rods are up locking. And I prefer an up locking reel seat for this reason: I have small weak hands, and I have a missing ligament in my thumb (casting hand). I found that having the reel closer to my hand makes it easier for me to cast. So I was very pleased to win the rod with an up locking reel seat.

I have two FF705s: 1) "K" series labeled 3 oz, downlocker, and 2) "N" series labeled 3 oz, uplocker.....the downlocker weighs 2.75 oz and the uplocker weighs 2.65 on my scale....the uplocker has cork reel seat, so may be why it is a touch lighter....

I believe they started labeling some of the same model rods a bit lighter in the mid to later '70s, so around "P, R or S" series....I know they did this with the FF755...and maybe others....not sure which weights are more accurate...maybe others have more info...

The FF70 and FF705 are two of the best, mass-produced glass fly rods ever made. Now that I finally have one of each, they’ll be passed down to my sons. Amazing that guys part ways with them that are avid anglers.

I look at those well-selected, terrific fly rods of their day, and when I see them in perfect condition without a scratch or any soiling on the grip, I think...unfulfilled dreams. Kind of sad (for them) actually.

I've been fishing it lately with a Blue Halo DT4F line that was given to me by a friend. It is a very supple line. Seems like a perfect fit for me.
