I understand there are two different 6'8" Imperials. One is a 4wt and one is a 6wt. Is one of those specifically marked 4wt or are they both marked 6wt and one of those a good 4wt?

Thanks--Barry

I don't recall seeing one marked for a 4 or 5 weight line, only 6 weight.

I've never been one to believe line recommendations anyway. I have plenty of rods that I think are marked for a line lighter than the sweet spot. For my particular Imperial rod, I like a DT4 line. I haven't handled enough of these to decide if there are two different 'flavors' out there. Some very experienced people feel that is the case.

Everytime I search eBay for St Croix rods, I have to wade through all the Imperials made from that other material. Orvis and LL Bean too.

Try looking under Fiberglass St. Coix fly rod.

Is there any way to identify the four weight from the six weight without purchasing everyone you see to try it out?

The one I have now is certainly not a four weight.

Thanks--Barry

Barry, I have never seen one rated 4wt, that does not mean there isn't such a creature out there.

Even the little 6ft Herters/St Croix I had was rated 6wt if I recall correctly. Again, old memory, but I think I used a 5wt the couple times I used it.

A lot of folks seem to like lighter lines on short rods, and I think somebody just decided they had one that was a 4wt.

There was one on here once upon a time with the name Arthur MacArthur on it that someone said was labeled 4-5-6, it had letter designations, IIRC. maybe a search will turn it up?

I think on the older rods and maybe especially Phillipsons that the lower numbered line doesn't cast better because of the matching the rod so much as because it has a smaller diameter to run though those tiny guides. I know that's true on my DFS, WF4 sails out there and #5 or #6 drag enough to slow the line down, but the rod feels better to me with the #6 (rod is marked HDH)

Had mine out today it was casting nicely with a Cortland DT4 up to 35ft without pushing it to hard.
I then tried a Cortland DT5 it cast that nicely as well, unfortunately I forgot the WF5.
So far I prefer the DT4
