Just won the bid on a Fenwick Woodstream FF807. Looks to be in good condition. As I understand, the "S" serial preface denotes late 70's mfr. Plan to pair it with a vintage Pflueger Medalist.

Thanks,
steve

Rod looks pretty pristine. Nice find.

Great rod, I really like mine. I’ve read that the ff807 was Jimmy Green’s favorite taper.

I am sure you will enjoy that rod. It's a fantastic bass rod.

I am always amazed at how many of these minty M and S serial number Fenwicks show up in fantastic condition. The clear-coat/epoxy is especially resilient, the chrome guides are top notch and even the stickers holds up well. Everything but the cap to the triangle tube holds up well and occasionally those are still intact.

Go out and get that grip dirty.

The cap of the tube is intact. However, the little plastic latch holding the cap down broke off in shipping and fell out of the shipping tube. Cap is still very secure.

Ha! Plan to get it dirty, and bass is the target.

Thanks,
steve

A 1494 1/2 Medalist would be an excellent choice for that beauty. The balance would be just about perfect.

Update:
I found a Pflueger Medalist 1494½, but the reel seat on the rod wasn't long enough for the reel foot. So, I found a Martin 67SS-A that just barely fit.

Now I have to find a rod for the Medalist. Dang.

Thanks,
steve

I love Martin-Fenwick combos, I use the same reel on my 807!

That's strange, I have four Fenwicks and use Medalists on all of them. In fact of the 20-30 fly rods I've owned since '75 Medalist went on every one, usually the 1498 but for the 8' Fenwicks I like 1495.
S should be '78-'79 manufacture.

Great classic 'glass rod/configuration; great reel choice. That cap is headed wherever it is those caps go. But there is hope in the form of a bead chain, or a zip tie.

Huh, that is odd. I have a 1495½ that fits, but I have to wiggle it to work it in. That saying, I have to wiggle the 67SS-A, too I also have two Martin 67As that don't fit. Must be the rod.

The cap on the tube is still firmly intact on the connecting side and fits snugly. The little snap that folds down to lock the opening side broke. But I take your meaning; opening and closing will eventually break that plastic connecting flap.

Since you brought it up, you don't see bead chain connectors on tube caps anymore. I wonder why. It can't be that expensive for the manufacturer.

Thanks,
steve

I've never seen a Fenwick that wouldn't fit a Medalist foot. Odd.

All your responses made me go back and look at it, again. And I stand corrected; with a bit of wiggling I can just barely get the Medalist foot on the seat. I don't know what I was doing, before. Maybe the locking nuts weren't fully open. I don't know, but I'm feeling pretty foolish, right now.

Thank you all for your help.
steve,

I was going to say my Fenwicks are all pre-Woodstream and that might be the difference, but good to know it was just an adjustment.

I really enjoy my FF807 M serial number rod for bass fishing. I use a Pflueger Automatic 1195 on it with an AirCel bass line. With a furled leader it cuts through the wind to heave big flies like a sex dungeon, Schmidterbug or game changer a country mile. Also pretty easy on the shoulder when casting 6+ hours. Thinking about trying out a Martin MG10 on it if I’m feeling a little saucy ….

My FF 807 carries a Medalist 1495. My hope is it’s up to the task come steelhead time. Most of the creeks around here have some chrome in them now but prime time is yet to come. What a sweet rod.

pictures please, when it happens ;-)

used to fish a Daiwa SF706 on mine, recently went back to a Shakespeare 2531 which is a sort of lower-quality Medalist..

I am sure the rod will work fine.

I got an FF807 M serial number a few weeks ago and it is an excellent rod. My first Fenwick so compared to my EC Featherlight 8’ it was “different”. Lot of folks on here mentioned it was a top Fenwick and I see why. I use it for bass fishing on lakes and I really respect how with a furled leader it will throw my #2 bass bugs and streamers into the wind with aplomb. Not a bad roll caster either! I put a Pflueger 1195 on there with an AirCel 7/8 bass line but may try my MG-10 once I get the 406 lines DT 7WT on there … hopefully soon …
