Just purchased this Phillipson online. It's in good shape except one guide needs re-wrapped. I haven't seen this type of guide before; are they available? Just curious.
The rod is heavier than I thought I'd be. Would entertain selling it. Any advice would be appreciated. thx

The guide looks fine from here. They are not readily available but I am sure you could still find some if you needed them.

You should fish it before you sell it, you may be pleasantly surprised.

That guide is not damaged. They were made with that open loop. All you need to do is wrap it. They were called “foulproof” guides.

If the weight and performance do not meet your expectation, then I’d sell it in the current condition rather than repairing it, at least now it is original.

If that damage was not presented before the sale, send it back as not being in the condition advertised. You should be able to get your money back.

thanks for the advice. I bought it from an auction house; so I don't have any confidence returning it, which is fine. I probably lean towards selling it at this point. I have a Fenwick FF705 which has a much lighter swing weight, thus will get used a lot more.
There's probably someone on here that would appreciate it more than me.

I have the G-MF76L (same blank?) as well as an FF705. I would rewrap the guide, put a Martin 48A automatic reel on it and line it with a 4wt. Thats what I did with mine and love it as a 4wt vintage outfit! That way it wont get as much competition with the FF705 as a 5wt. The balance will feel good with a heavier reel so the swing weight will be more pleasant. Vintage 4wts are hard to come by.

I will give you my usual answer about such questions and issues. Contact Rick’s Rods, a shop in Denver. Rick and his partner Marilynn are the current owners of the Phillipson remaining stock and use of the name. Rick is very pleasant and helpful. He may be able to repair the wrap or replace it with the correct thread.

That is an odd looking tip. It is easily changed, however. I really like the 80L Phillipsons and would guess the 76Ls would be excellent rods. If you want to sell it, I'm sure several on this forum would be interested.

I used to own one of those in the standard not the 'L' or light version. The tip is a mildrum ring and it is original equipment. Unfortunately the p-bucket practice has ruined my image but you can make out the thick ring on the tip guide from mine-

There would not be much difference weight difference but the longer length will give it a different feel.I have an ff706 and a 7' Phillipson fly fox.Same length and line weight. They couldn;t be more different.I fish the phillipson all the time the fenwick i have not used in a couple years. It would make a fine spinning rod and am sure it is a good small stream rod.I have tried to sell or trade it with little interest .I have heard the 7'6 phillipsons are not the cream of the crop either tho.But i never heard of a bad Phillipson and that one is a looker.

The guides on some of those Royals were gold-anodized. Probably an original tip top and not brass. That’s quite a find. Did you get the gold travel tube too?

My 8' Phillipson has the same tip. I would think yours is original.

thank you for all the replies. Yes it has the gold colored rod tube.

I talked to Rick at Ricks Rods and will be sending it to him for repair; so it can stay as close to original as possible.

+1. Haven't been to Rick's in a while -- I may have to go visit your rod while it's in the 'hospital'. ;-)

Re: the gold tip top, that’s not unheard of for a Phillipson. The hardware matches exactly my Johnson Profile.
