Of all the glass Scotts you have come across which one(s) do you think are the most remarkable and the most interesting to collect? I am a fan of the minimalist aesthetic and find some of the tapers unique and surprisingly good on the water - as a matter of fact even the Scotts that haven't impressed me casting on grass, subsequently proved to be excellent fishing rods on the stream without exception. Unfortunately I only have limited exposure to glass Scotts (only a few black and brown models) so I'm curious about what you all think.

Scott glass, has a special place in my mind. My first glass rod, was a F652/3 black blank, and it started my obsession with Scott and glass rods. I have owned every black F series rod in the lineup and that F652/3 was special. I have owned the entire F2 lineup, as well and I really liked the F2 602/3, the most.

The best 7ft 3wt rod of any material, that I have ever fished and own, is the brown Scott F703/2, from the 90's. The brown F703/2, is pure magic! The taper is strong, and accurate, with amazing feel.

I second Wes' sentiment that the maroon F703 is a wonderful rod. I used to like mine with 4wt lines but more and more I like a DT3.

I'll admit to having a small stable of early Scott glass. My favorite among the classics are the F70/5, which is as fine a small stream rod as the fly rod world has ever seen, and the F84.

Scott F79 yellow glass built by Harry among the smoothest fly rods I have ever cast.

I have had a number of the classic ones come through my hands, whether they were brown or yellow, not much difference. The F79 in a 2pc and the F70 in 2,3, or 5 piece are exceptional. I still have and fish an early yellow F79 and an early brown F70/3. I like them both best as 4 wts. I would give special mention to the 7.5' 4/5 wt, 8' 6 wt, and the 8' 7wt Bass classic Scotts as very nice rods too. I just kept other models in those configurations instead.

My favourite is a black F794/4. It has a very strong butt and a fine tip. It has a distinctive action and feel and is incredibly effective on the water, it's especially nice for fishing wets. Fishing this rod is soothing - it's therapy for anything that might be bothering you. It's like you can have a conversation with it and it's always constructive and positive.

I also really like the 704/5 - It's a sweet small stream progressive rod. It's as short and light as I ever really want to get but it's very good and very pretty.

I have the anniversary special and haven't seen let alone cast the original - doubt many have had the luck to play with both.

The F704/5 25th anniversary maroon glass is S glass, while the yellow/brown SF F70/5 is E glass. I've not cast the 25th anniversary edition, but maybe I can bring my yellow F70/5 down to Aurelio's next year and we can have some casting (and fishing) fun!

Aurelio, as far as I know all the "modern" Scotts are S glass.

the 7'7"#4 disapointed me...
but the 2 are realy beautyfull - like the publicity says : every time i take the litte one out of its sock, it put a smile on my face :) and i apreciate to cast it all the day long even without catching any fish :)

I'm also a fan of Scott, though I have acquired more of their graphite rods than glass. However, I have managed to get my hands on a brown glass 703 and an F2 602 and really enjoy both rods. I briefly had a 764 black glass and sold it after fishing it for a summer.

Wes333, I agree with your assessment. The 90s 703 is great! I'm glad I found it and will be holding onto it for a long long time.

This is a great thread and what I find interesting is a couple of years ago I tried to order a custom F2 653 cut to a 4pc. but was informed they could not do it because they used 3 different mandrels one for each section and found that odd for a spiget ferule but I love it.

I've always liked Scotts and have fished quite a few over the years, glass and graphite. I think my favorite fiberglass Scott is the San Francisco built F70. I bought this one new in the early 80's.

curious if any of the Scott collectors here also enjoy Larry Kenney rods?
And if you own two in similar configurations, how do they compare apples-to-apples?

I think L. Kenney is a great master..... and probably the most collectible current builder of all. His light trout rods are very special - they seem unabashedly designed to explore the limits of "glassiness". The Scotts I am familiar with do what they are supposed to do extremely well without drawing as much attention to themselves, without demanding the same level of engagement. There's genius there too but it's just not quite out in the open.

The two that I am familiar with in the same configuration are the 794s. The Scott is a 4 piece and 7'10" so one inch longer. The two rods are very different in feel and power - the Scott being more powerful,. They are both progressive deep flexing rods with fine tips but they couldn't feel more different.

Well said and I completely agree. Kenney's 8'3 4/5 embodies the "glassiness" you describe. Exceptional casting and mending, versatile to fish over several line weights and capable in all fly fishing styles and situations. I think Mr Kenney's models in weights 3 thru 7 are as good as trout rods can be, graphite or glass. I don't have much experience with Scott glass having owned only the 703 and 764 black glass F1s. Fine rods but to me limited compared to Kenney's 4/5.

The only Scott I have is the black F703/3, and while it's a fun little rod I have to agree with those who say it is really a 4 wt--it was sold as a 3 wt, but loads much better at short distances with the heavier line.

I've owned both at a certain point a few years ago. Sold the Anniversary rod (mint). Maybe I'll regret selling it one day. It was much more of a 5 weight rod. With a 4 weight line it felt underlined. The SF F70/5 is a true 4 weight rod.

Line Guard the SA mastery trout that came out a few years ago and still made today is a long belly and turns the F703 into a true 3wt. Just amazing........Aurelio

For me the neatest Scott rod I have come across to collect, cast and fish is the 2014 S-Glass 7'7" 3/1 4wt.
