Okay guys, I accidentally bought two parametrics on the auction site. I put in a lowball bid on a Parametric Deluxe 8 1/2', then a couple of hours later found a Gowdy 7 1/2 for a very low buy it now. An hour later the auction ended and I had both rods :eek . The result of a very short lawn session is that the Gowdy 7 1/2 may end up with Wf6 Cortland Sylk. The 8 1/2 is a three piece that feels very soft in the tip. I tried a WF 7 on it and it cast well enough, but I want to try a six on it as well.
Anyone with experience with these have any suggestions? I'm pretty stoked about these as I'm only in about $70 on the pair.

I've got the 8' version of your 8.5' and it works better with a DT6. My later Berkley Parametric PD-40 likes a WF7 and is underlined with a DT6. It's all about feel. I would definitely give your 8.5' a try with a DT6.

dang, that's a great find. I recently picked up a 7.5' and it's fast becoming one of my goto all rounder rods. It'll take a standard 6wt, and I've also been throwing streamers on both a 200gr streamer line (Airflo) and a 200gr Commando head and it performs very nicely with all of the above. Super versatile rod...

I have had a lot of Para/Metric's come into my hands. In reference to the straight tapered grip P40/PD40 models with the brass badge on the grip and wood (walnut?) reel seat, I like a 6 on the 7.5', a 6 on the 8' 2pc, a 6 or 7 on the 8' 3pc but usually a 7, and a 7 on the 8.5'. I like the two 8 footers the best but they are all absolutely terrific rods, especially for the money.

My 3pc 8.5fter I use a 7wt Use it for carp.

When I had a 7.5fter, I used a 6 or 7wt line, would deal with both well.

Wow! Nice catch. Like Crusty, my favorite is the 8' parametric and for me, the best one is the 2pc Gowdy. I have 2 just in case. :)
I liked my 8.5' 2pc parametric with a 7wt line. I've never cast the 3pc model

one I never got around to trying but was always on the back of my want list, anyway, was an 8' 3pc.
Some of the Berkley Specialist S-glass rods that followed are very nice.

The 8ft 3pc is about as sweet a caster as you can get. The 8.5ft 3pc is substantially heavier.

I did have a Specialst 8' S-glass 3-pc that was a 7/8 pocket rocket, and light in hand. I ended up selling it to Les, because I have salt rods in spades

I have 3 of them, all 8'6" and I like all with WF7 the best. My favorite is the two piece P-40. It's amazingly light for a glass rod of that vintage. I also like the original bag and tube it came with, a neat gray plastic with screw on top held with a chain and the original label in great shape. I've never seen another one like it. I have a 3 piece PD-40 that's a nice rod too. My least favorite is the Gowdy, which is much heavier than the others. I think if I add all of them up, I don't think I paid more than $150 for all. The P-40 just might be one of my all time favorite glass rods for smallmouths.

i like the 8'6' gowdy the more i fish it.it is a little heavy but not tippy and really has some power if needed.not good at describing an action but it seems to respond to how i use it.if i want it to be delicate it will.if i want to throw a big back cast it really flexs smoothly and throws far with ease.it does get my elbow to aching after a while.

Can we go back to this statement?

I understand how it happens, I'm just letting you know that this is hoarding starts.

The next statement to watch out for is:

I forgot that I already had one.

or

I wanted a backup.

If anyone knows a cure, please let me know.

The cure is to take up a different hobby. You find yourself selling rods to buy a different type toy.

I got out the other day to fish my 3 piece Parametric and wasn't really crazy about it. It felt softer and slower than my two piece PD-40. To go from big streamers and big poppers it really has been easier and nicer with graphite lately, like an old Fenwick HMG 806 or my Winston pre-IM6 9 foot 6 weight.
