My wife owns a horse, therefore really encourages me to purchase any fly fishing gear I want. I’d have to work pretty hard to exceed the horse budget!

My collection has “progressed” from “factory”, to a custom rod builder, to knowing who designs and (in some cases) is making the tapers; it’s just cool for me to know (and support) the people doing the design and work.

I’m happy to ramble-on about why each of the rods listed is special, just ask!

3wt.
Graywolf Troutsmiths Carbon 8’

4wt
Epic 476
********* Western Glass 8’9”
********* YS Fast. 9’
Graywolf Troutsmiths Carbon 8’6”

5wt
********* Western Glass 8’6”
Echo 3 10’
Graywolf Troutsmiths Carbon 8’6”

6wt
********* YS Fast 9’
Echo 3 9’
Epic 876

7wt
Blue Halo Gen II 8’6” (two of these)

8wt
Blue Halo Zen 8’6”
Reddington Vapen 9’.
I can find good in almost everything, this rod is no exception, the red golf grip handle is great. But it’s no joy to cast.

Had a few changes since I last posted on this one...

gone: Echo 11' glass switch

let's start at the beginning.

6wts
Steffen 8'
Berkley Parametric 6'3"
Berkley Gowdy P/M 7'6" (I also use this as a 7wt)

7wts
Echo BAG Quickshot
Fisher 8'6"

8wts
Steffen 8'6"
Seele 8'8"

10wts
Epic Bandit 7'9"
North Fork Composites 8'6" Iconoglass (just got the blank)

12wts
Seele 8'2" Saltz Pro

10 rods....I guess that's not too bad.

Cheers!

I guess I forgot to add in my graphite stuff...I do have some and most of it actually gets used from time to time.

3wt:
10' unknown brand for euro-nymphing, works great though (for that application)

7wt:
9' (now 8'11") Dan Craft PT--surprisingly, I actually like the way it casts better now
8' TFO Mini-Mag (6-8)

8wt:
9' Orvis H3D (cannon in the wind)

10wt:
(2) 8' TFO Mini-Mag (8-10)

90 percent of my fishing now is trout and bluegills the other 10 is a once a year shad trip and an occasional smallie venture ( due to flooding and poor conservation Maryland smallies are maybe in the 10-12” range anymore)... so a strong 5 weight is all i need (I still have a t&t lotic 5 which may replace the ********* 5 as I’ve never used it-its new- so I’ll probably sell that one as the t&t has been used frequently).... having said all that a 6 wgt is a superb line weight for EVERYTHING!

I can understand the strong 5 - just thought by your MD location you'd have a lot of big Smallmouth and trout water relatively close by, and have need for a big 6 and even 7 wts. for that kind of fishing. Use to be the only rod I had was an eight foot 5-6 weight graphite and used it for everything. Enlightenment gets expensive. :lol

MD waters have gone downhill in the past 15 years or so.... smallies in the 8-12” range.... not as many bluegills... trout average 7-12” ( though I’ve snagged a few 14-16 inchers) but that’s about it.... due to taking care of 91 year old mom, wife and a pair of Labs I don’t get to travel too far... but I’m sure grateful for what I do have!

Im embarrassed to say how many fiberglass fly poles i have now. But with 5-6 wt rods being my favorite i have about 20 of Fenwick and Phillipsons in those line weights (includes multiples of several models).

Fenwick FF756 - 3oz
Fenwick FF806 - 3 1/8 oz (first fly rod I ever bought in 1976)
Fenwick FF856 - 3 7/8 oz

Do you see a pattern here? Yes, I like 6 wt. rods, that way I can use my Scientific Anglers System 6 Fly Reel and my spare spools? I got the FF806 and SA reel at the same time and over the years got spare spools.

Other rods 2 graphite one 3 wt. and the other 6\7 wt. and two bamboo both 6 wt. and two spay rods.

Gene,
Now you just need an FF79, FF84 and FF85-3 (6wt version) Maybe an FF70, FF75 while your at it. :)

The FF856-5 is also a neat rod. Those 6wt Fenwick's were amazing rods.

I'm thinking on getting a Fenwick FF90-3 6\7wt and replacing my FF756 or just adding a FF756-4. Also I see a place for a FF806-4, FF706 or FF705. The wife thinks I have too many rods now.

I'm not a big fan of short <7' rods.

My FF806 has an incredibly special place in my heart and I would never get rid of that one. Between that one and my South Bend 290 bamboo rod, the wife will need to get rid of them and my SA reel after I die.

My go to rod for the last two seasons has been a Scott FS 724. Really like that one. Just sold a FS 663 to finance a Kabuto 663. Such a good price on the Kab I couldn’t pass. Figured I can always find another FS 663 down the road. It’s real point and shoot rod with a Rio Gold 3wt.

Received two more rods on the same day a week ago. Try explaining that one to your wife. Anyway one is a Scott F703, regretted selling the last one so found another. The other rod that day was a Kabuto 704 fresh from Kab himself. If it casts half as good as it looks I’ll be very happy.

Once I’m done paying for those I’ll be looking to add a Scott F764 and another Kabuto. Don’t know which one yet but leaning towards the 79345.

Over the last 2 1/2 years, I have only added about 3 rods to my list: a 7' 2/3 weight Fisher glass, a CTS 7'6" 3 weight, and most notably a Tom Morgan 8' 4 piece 5 weight built by Graywolf. I have also moved some rods out: an 8' 2 pc. 4 weight Diamondglass, a Browning Silaflex 7'6' 4 pc. 6 weight, and for some reason I don't yet understand, an 8' 4/5 weight Steffen.

All these rods still see some time on the water.

These are the ones I take fishing the most.

6'8" 4wt St Croix Imperial ~ Vince Cummings used this same blank in his Ultimate series. Sweet brookie rod.
6'8" 5wt Herter's ~ Same as above but a nice moderate 5wt.
7' 5wt Vince Cummings River Rat ~ Progressive and full flexing. Probably has nicest fish on feel out of all my rods.
7'6" 5wt Fenwick FF75 ~ An early in the series light action 5wt. A classic for good reason..
8' 4/5wt Vince Cummings Ultimate Ltd FL-280L ~ Fantastic casting, light yet capable rod. Clearly Vince knew what he was doing.
8' 5/6 Lamiglas SFL ~ Sweet full flexer with just enough zip for dries or small nymphs. Great feel.
8'6" 5wt South Bend 323 (bamboo) ~ A really nice medium / light action rod. A well designed 8'6" 5wt cane rod is about the perfect tool for chasing trout.
8'6" 7wt Berkley Parametric P40 ~ Light in hand and just a great casting / fishing rod. Berkley nailed this one.

Additions that have made the rotation.

6'6" 3wt Ijuin Yomogi
7'6" 5/6wt Cummings River Rat
9' 5/6wt Cortland Leon Chandler
