Mark, what an amazing collection... top notch quality and plenty of it!

I too remember Kaufman's Streamborn. Never visted but through the pages of their catalog, which was a welcome tonic to ease the passage of a long winter.

No, I was never there but wish I had had the opportunity. I don't think I had ever purchased the thing from them but I do remember there catalogues though.

Thanks. I probably have a catalog or two someplace, but gave up looking a while ago after going through several boxes of '70s Fly Fisherman. If I remember correctly, Kaufmann had a good fly-tying book or two, collectible maybe?

As I recall yes - Randall was top notch tier and had a couple books - at least one came with some flies I think/read somewhere.

They were a big deal if i remember.I think they sent me a catalog once by calling a toll free number or something.I was just starting to take an interest in this stuff.Probably early 80s i bought a fly fishing mag along with the usual field and stream I called the number and they sent me a catalog.I was pretty overwhelmed at the time at how complex all the tying stuff was.I really dont recall looking at the rods and reels.

Same here. I was just getting back to fly fishing when I received my first catalogs from Kaufmann's. I learned a lot from them about the sport as it was in the early '90s. I think they had rodbuilding components and supplies, and that was likely where I got interested in the hobby.

I haven't looked at my copy of Randall Kaufman's book on tying nymphs in a long time. That's because I have it memorized. I'm not familiar with what folks reference now regarding tying nymphs. Roughly thirty years ago, Randall Kaufman was the godfather of nymphs.

definitely (mostly) top notch people who worked there...but the owner screwed everyone (employees and folks who had trips booked) over pretty bad when they shut their doors, then disappeared.

Kaufman’s was the premiere fly shop in Portland, OR for decades (Tigard, OR is a suburb city about 7 miles south of Portland). I know this, because I lived and worked within two miles of Kaufman’s for nine years and not too much further away for another 20 years. I frequented the store more times than my wallet warranted back then...mostly I would just buy a fly or two and drool over the rods, reels and gear...it was definitely full retail...everyone who worked there were the most knowledgeable people in the area...I would always gleen as much as I could and they were always willing to share...I remember my boss at the time buying a rod from there for $400 in the late eighties...I don’t recall what it was....I just remember being floored...and envious...everybody in the community into fly fishing knew Kaufman’s and spoke highly of all the great people and gear they carried...you can imagine how the sudden closing of such an iconic shop sent shockwaves through that community...

:lol Yep, I started a list of what rods to take - currently at 8 (5 glass, 3 bamboo) from 3 wt. to 6 wt.
After I pulled out all my glass rods yesterday there is at least one or two more to add. Good thing there is room in the RV, not sure where I'm going to put our clothes though.
