I joined this board in April of 2015 after casting and buying an Orvis Superfine Glass. Since then, everytime I turn around, there are more rods. I don't know where they come from. Probably too much drinking and web-surfing. It is not an enormous collection, but it has accumulated at the speed of the rod-a-month club. I'll try to justify them as I go.

The Museum Pieces: These get used a bit, but mostly admired. I grew up with a blue Garcia Conolon, and now have some of those, as well as their fancier rods I could have never afforded. They catch some fish but mostly make me feel young and happy.

Garcia Conolon 2636A Blue 7'3” 6wt
Garcia Conolon 2637A Blue 2 star 8’0” 6/7wt
Garcia Conolon 2405C Gold 8’6” 7wt
Garcia Conolon 2405A Five Star 8’6” 6/7wt

The Classic Workhorses: These are the holy grails, cheap enough to take out on the paddle board or float tube, tough enough to strap to a pack, good enough to fish anytime. They get used A LOT

Garcia Conlon N547-A 7’6” 6wt 5 piece
Phillipson Master G MF 6’6” 6wt
Fenwick FF 75-4
Fenwick FF 756-4
Fenwick FF806
Fenwick FF 807
Fenwick FF 79
Fenwick FF 705

The New Affordable Glass: These get the serious use and abuse---tossed in the truck, strapped to the paddle board, left rigged in the boathouse. They all cast fine, and catch the same fish a fancy rod would.

Eagle Claw Featherlight 6’6” 3-4wt
Eagle Claw Featherlight 7” 5wt (two versions)
Eagle Claw Featherlight 8” 6wt
CGR 6’2” 2wt
CGR 7’ 4-5Wt
Aventik 6’7” 4 piece 3wt
Aventik 7’8” 4 piece 4wt
Aventik 8’1” 4 piece 5wt

The New and Expensive: Gorgeous rods which work very, very well, are kept in tubes, and just fish nice streams, kept safe from float tubes, backpacks and car doors
Orvis Superfine Glass 7’6” 4wt
Orvis Superfine Glass 8’ 5wt
Steffen 8’ 3/4wt

I'm going to divide this list into Trout rods and Smallmouth rods, so it looks as if I'm less profligate than I really am:

TROUT
Fisher 6'9" 3/1 4/5wt. (from their own factory); I use it as a 4wt.
Klassic Glass 7' 3/1 4wt (Archfly's build)
SA System 5
Fenwick FF79
Hardy JET 8' 6wt

SMALLMOUTH
SA System 6
Fenwick FF856
Fenwick FF837
Fenwick FF857

RODS I'LL BE SELLING OFF
Cortland PRF2000 7' 6pc. a 6 wt, I think
Heddon Pal Pro Weight 8385 8' 7wt

Plus, yes, there are some grrrrrraphites . . . that I won't mention

Fish on!
Peter

My wife counted my fly rods again.

I think it's time to sell some rods.

If you have them stored in a way they can be easily counted you should be ashamed of yourself! ;)

Bamboozle is right. My x-wife hid stuff really well. What wasn't in the house was in the trunk of her car; safety deposit box or storage bin. If you ever reach storage bin status you may have a problem. ;)
Newfydog, I'm tossing you the life preserver. I began collecting gear in the 1980's. Granted I sell some off as I add others. I just drew a list of what I have and you have nearly as many rods as I do...and l have too many. My vintage rods are mostly Hardys and Phillipsons. My only lower price new rod is a Fenwick Fenglas 704 (a great value at $179). The other new stuff is higher end and a few custom built rods on good blanks. If you want to slow the rate of your collection consider saving up for better rods. You may still wind up with a crazy number of rods but they will have more lasting value than the CGRs and Aventiks. Nothing's wrong with fishing those, just a long term thought. An investment strategy. Call me Edward Jones baby! :lol :lol

Thanks for the help. It is worse than you think, because I left out the Tenkara and those black Gr... rods.
My nine cheapo rods cost $430 total, just about enough for one fancy rod. At this point I might consider that a good trade, but I've had a great time using all those different rods, seeing what matters (and does not matter), and what I like. I definitely need some throw-away rods for abuse, travel, and the smug pleasure of sometimes dropping a fly in just the right spot with a $20 rod , but I probably have as many of them as I need now. Your advice is sound, and is the natural progression. I'm more inclined to fill out the rest of the Orvis series than the CGR. I have to point out, though, that it just saves space, not money :).

Edit: Then again, maybe you can never have too many cheaper rods. Mr Featherlight is downright inspirational:

Very nice Jukka! The SF Winstons are true classics. IMO the Fine Tackle Morgans are already classics, Christian's graceful style complements Tom Morgan's vision perfectly. I expect some time in the near future they will be as valuable and desirable as your Claudio is now. An excellent group of rods for a collector as well as an angler.

Frogmorton, 100% aligned with your opinions. It's easy to see that my preference is vintage Fisher blank and Morgan's design. I like Cummigs too but quite often I haven't had a change to get a proper hold when Mr. Fullflex has approached me with his "cant's resist" purchase offers :lol

OK - I'll bring a sense of normalcy to this discussion - or at least try. Yes - Only 3 glass rods - all 3 piece.
Steffen 8'3 -- 5/6 line
Steffen 8" -- 4/5 line
Steffen 7'9" - 3/4 line

I won't list the bamboo rods - my wife may discover this site someday. ;)

My wife has never said anything about all my rods, but I think maybe she is somewhat afraid to look in my rod cabinet in the garage. I guess she figures my hobby is certainly healthier and less expensive than hitting the bars or gambling. Some of my friends have to ask if they can get away to go fishing; she frequently asks me why I'm not out fishing. You suppose she might be wanting me out of the house?
