New year, updated collections? I know it's been done before but I was just wondering how everyone's current collections are shaping up...more...less...the same?

Barclay 70p
Barclay 70LS
Scott F1 754
Epic 686

I have a self imposed limit of 5 rods, and after parring down substantially last year I am starting off the new year with a record low rod count:
Barclay 7105
Barclay 784

Have another rod on the way though, a McFarland S-glass 8'6" #6/7.

Rods I got rid of in 2016:
- Graywolf E-Glass 703, traded towards the McFarland S-glass.
- Scott F1 754
- T&T LPS 904 graphite,
I miss these two rods, but on the other hand their departure made possible the aquisition of the two superb Barclays.

I'm afraid to list them all... But here goes!

CGR 3wt-- Probably will end up donating this one to my TU's upcoming banquet.
CGR 7/8-- A great beater rod, one I'm not afraid to knock around in the kayak.
Unknown 7' 3wt-- Bought the blank here on the forum and built it out as an inexpensive practice rod.
Barclay 64p--Amazing rod. You'll have to pry this one out of my cold dead hand...
Barclay 70p--Equally amazing rod. You'll have to pry this one out of my other cold dead hand. Ha!
Barclay 8'2" 3wt--Just got this one. Excited to put it through its paces
Steffen 7' 3/4 2 piece-- Lovely small stream rod that I'm saving for when one of my kids takes to blue lining
Steffen 8' 3/4 2 piece-- My first proper glass rod and still a favorite. Such a versatile taper that never leaves you wishing you'd brought a different rod along.
Steffen 8' 5/6 3 piece Greywolf build-- Probably the overall finest casting rod I've ever handled.
Epic 686-- Just a fantastic do-all warm water rod
Epic 888-- An absolute cannon with loads of reserve power.

I don't think I'm forgetting any... If I am, I shall repent by immediately taking it fishing.

I actually reduced my number of glass rods during 2016, though I did pick up a couple of old Scott Gs and so my total number of rods increased.

Glass rods bought during 2016:

McFarland black S 8'8" 4 wt
Steffen 7'9" 5/6 (I actually ordered it in 2015, but I made the final payment when delivered in early 2016)

Glass rods sold during 2016:

McFarland black S 8'8" 4 wt
Kenney 8'3" 4/5
Epic 686

2017 activity:

Have a Barclay 70LS coming

In glass:

Brown scott f84 2 piece 5 weight
Brown scott f85 5 piece 7 weight
Lami yellow 7' 3 piece 3 weight I built
Paddock lemon drop 7' 3 piece 3 weight I built
Steffen 8'3 5/6 mckellip build
Paddock 8' 5 weight 3 piece (his 2016 build)

I haven't cast the paddock 5 weight yet. The lemon drop is the best 7' 3wt rod I've cast. The scotts are nice rods but I don't use them all that much. The steffen is a nice rod that I use for streamers on smaller streams or dry dropper in pocket water. The attention to detail on both the mckellip build and the paddock build is very impressive. Much better than my attempts at rod building.

Glass-wise, the little stable these days is

Fisher 8' 5wt (Andy Manchester)
Fenwick FF79
Steffen 8'6" 5/6 (Steffen)
Epic 580 (Graywolf)

805s in abundance - I think I see a small stream 4wt on the horizon...

A recent acquisition, not glass, but similar in spirit, is an old Orvis Spring Creek. What a willowy, sweet thing. As full-flexing or more so than any of the above.

i love these lists. I'm such a nerd.

I've had a few go in and out, but currently (from little to big):
Epic 376
Steffen 8' 4/5
Fenwick FF705
Epic 686
Lamiglas SFL 96-6/7F
Fenwick FF807
Lamiglas SFL 102-7/8F
Epic Bandit
2h rods:
Fenwick FF9310 (at 9'9" with the bottom handle, I pretty much consider this a very short spey rod)
Flywerks RetroGlass 11'9" 7wt
Epic DH11
Flywerks RetroGlass 12'7" 7/8wt

All are my own builds except the Fenwicks and the big RetroGlass, which just goes to show that I need to get out of the house more.

Recently sold a couple Silaflexes and a Fenwick to finance two more Steffens (before his prices go up!) - 8'6" 7/8 and 8' 8/9

Things I want:
A long 3wt - ********* or Kabuto maybe
FF806 with the uplocking cork seat
A CTS trout sized switch, something like a 10-10'6" 3wt

Problem is I'm running out of things I'm willing to sell...

I don't recall acquiring any new rods in 2016, but I did trade one to an old friend for a reel he gave me. Well, I have to take it back, I did order a Tenkara rod on December 27, but it hasn't arrived yet, and besides it is not fiberglass anyway so obviously doesn't count. However, that apparently opened the flood gates because in the last four days I have purchased two rods: a 7' 2 piece Sierra Classic rod and a 7'6" 4 weight McFarland rod built by Chris Barclay. Hopefully this will assuage my lust for new rods for a while.

Larry

Corey,

Your lists are always so interesting.

How many do you have that did't make the list?
Is there a runner up that is over 8'
And are your custom Fenwicks (FL96-6 and FL84-5) the Yellow or Brown versions?

I have some for sale at the moment.
They are all great rods, but the "collection" was growing much too large:

Paddock Brown Series 7'0" 3/1 #3(#4)
IZCH PBB804 8'0" 2/1 #4
Norie Flex Tailor 6'3" 2/1 #3
Cortland FR-2000 7'0" 2/1 #5
Cortland FR-2000 7'6" 2/1 #5
Cortland FR-2000 8'0" 2/1 #6
Cortland FR-2000 8'6" 2/1 #7
Diamondback Diamondglass 6'6" 2/1 #3 (custom)
Orvis Golden Eagle 7'6" 2/1 #5/6 (custom)

carlz wrote:

as you can see, the glut of my fiberglass collection are short/light rods.
I have a handful of bamboo, in the 7'6"-9'0" range, #5 weights - all of them.
I REALLY like fishing them.

Also, currently building 2 McFarland graphites a #4 and a #6, both 8'8".
These are going to be FANTASTIC rods.

Haven't handled many fiberglass rods much over 8'0" that I liked better than other materials, I will be honest.
But I do have a 3-piece Steffen 8'3" #5/6 and an 8'6" Sceptre in the cache to build someday...

They are yellow. The '84 was a one-piece that Fred Paddock ferruled for me.
The '96 is the standard 2-piece sleeve ferrule.

Those FR2000's are great rods. Mine are on the "keep" list right now. However that is sort of a moot point since I don't seem to be selling any rods.

I don't have a collection, I have an accumulation.

-------------------------------
against my better discretion I will post some of my rod accumulation. When I go looking for a rod I sort of feel like Olivander out of a Harry Potter novel.

HA! Yeah, I was going to call you out for a list, Carlz, since it always seems like you have personal experience with every rod I've purchased, sold, or considered purchasing in the 3 years I've been on this forum. :lol

When you see me getting the step stool out to pull one down from the rafters, it's usually because someone posted a question about a rod that I haven't looked at or cast recently.

I think a lot of us need to bookmark these photos to show to our spouse whenever the UPS truck is about to show up with a long box that doesn't contain a dozen roses. "Yes honey, I do need another rod. I really don't have all that many. I mean, look at these photos. And that's only SOME of what this guy has."

Ha! Yes WNC.

But honestly, Carl, what a wonderful "accumulation!" You have a real working reference library. You need to catalogue your rods if you haven't already.

Picketpin,

A reference library, that's really how I look at it. When I have time and the kids are all out of the house, maybe when I am retired, I will catalog them and capture some statistics and then can move them on. Right now it just isn't worth the effort. My preferences change over time and I have the space and most of these are not worth very much monetarily.

The first effort for cataloging them would be a photo library of grips and wraps. And then a Grip Shape library like the taper libraries that are out there for bamboo.

Yes, that's a great approach! And it is time consuming. I have 20 or 25 glass rods- not a lot, and not collectible, but I'm just too disorganized (read: not motivated) to list or catalog them.
