Score this RF80 recently from a forum member. I always wanted a Royal and finally my time came. I took it fishing in the salt yesterday and it performed quite well, though perhaps a bit too limber compared to the graphite I usually use in San Diego Bay. This is definitely not one I will sell.

Royals are very fine Phillipsons. Nice grab! What's the line rating on that RF80? I've an RF80L that I prefer with a Cortland "peach" DT5.

...and, yeah, maybe not a great choice for fishing the salt...:)

That is a heck of a nice rod. The RF80 is a 7 weight, the RF80L a 5 weight. You can look them over in the Phillipson catalog: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10370

It would have been an all-around freshwater rod in its time. Saltwater use would have been far down the list of potential applications although why not with today's sw opportunities. Rinse well.

But, gosh, you know, a fine 'glass 7 weight isn't too limber compared to graphite. Of course it is more flexible and less brittle, having a lower modulus. It has to be more flexible than a comparable 'graphite 7 weight or it would be, well, maybe a 10 or 11 weight.

So around here, we would say the graphite is too stiff compared to this fiberglass model. For flies cast with a seven weight and fish caught on them, that rod is fit as ever. Thanks for showing.

Whrlpool, thanks for the perspective: I see what you mean. As you mentioned, it's a 7-weight. Here are some more pictures.

Between this and your green Wonderod, I'd say you're on a remarkable roll Russ! Very nice acquisition.

Definitely one of the nicest looking Phillipsons the Royals. I have the seven foot six 6wt myself. Doesn't see much use but have had a hard time letting it go because of its look.

I scored a Phillipson SK80 last night on the bay and wanted to see what kind of feedback there was. This will be my 2nd Phillipson, so I'm pretty excited.

Glassfly,
Welcome to the Royal Club !!

Glad to hear your turn finally came ..
Although if you keep fishing it in salt water your time may Go!!
I won’t even fish Brackish water with mine .

I leave the brackish-salty tasks to an old green master from my Arsenal.

I’m with jeffsod.. I’d never sell my royals ..
I just like to look at them !! ;)
They’re so beautiful…

CrustyRusty …
I’ll hit u with some feedback on your post
(You stole my rod .. lol :lol )

Glad to see Phillipson gettin back into the mix around here !
Keep Flying Those Philly’s

Ottobahn, sorry man. I was like how much do I really want to bid. After playing ping pong in my head I came up with the number. The really funny thing is my max bid only won the auction by 14 cents! It was so meant to be. I was shocked, and thrilled! LOL :D

I was tempted to bid on that rod, and was watching it, but in the end my max bid would have been nowhere close - as I have a number of rods in that weight/length. I hope you really enjoy it. There is some good information here in archives for tightening that no rock reel seat. It helped me tighten the seat to reel foot correctly so the ring is not at an angle when tight.

The only thing better on a Phillipson Royal is upgrading the guides after you wear out the original set.

Enlist me in the Royal-lover camp. I have two, the eight-foot 5-weight that everyone favors, but a rarer one, too: an 8 1/2' 8-weight, with a removable extension butt that snuggles in to its own little pouch attached to the original rod sack. I know it's counterintuitive, but I sometimes think the longer rods have more
"fiberglassness" than shorter ones; that is, you can really feel the flex longer, it's exaggerated, so the difference with graphite is even more pronounced. Not a lightweight, by any means, but the feel makes a little arm fatigue worth it. Hell, what are ice packs for anyway!

I'm probably crazy, but maybe some of you get what I mean. In any case, Royals are drop-dead gorgeous and a hell of a lot of fun.
