Picked up a few new toys this weekend.
St Croix 7090 xxl in near mint condition
Pflueger 1492 w/ round line guard and metal latch
Pflueger gem with telephone latch

opinions on the St. Croix? good , bad? says it takes a 6 wt but I'm thinking of starting with a 5 and going from there.

Nice haul!
I saw your post on the Classic Rod Forum so I know your rod is the 6'8" model. I have several (rod in avatar) and like them a lot. St Croix tweaked these over the years so what line ends up working best will vary. Two of mine are sweet small stream four weights and the other is a crisper (in a good way) 5/6 rod. Enjoy, that's a nice little rod.

Just bringing back this post.

With this rod, what lines do you like best with the 6' 8" 7090xxl?

Not particularly line sensitive - WF or DT. Line weight varies depending on which blank your rod is based on. The earlier 6’8” brown blank 7090xxl is a sweet 4-5wt. The later amber colored blank - also sold as the colorful Herter’s RFSC series - is a 6wt in my hands

There are several threads on what line to use with this rod. Try searching for croix xxl and you will get dozens of posts.

Briefly, the specific 7090 XXL rod, and the user line preference with that specific rod, vary greatly. Forum members report liking 3 thru 6 weight lines. As a result, you will need to experiment with your rod to come up with a line that you prefer.

Thank you Tom, I did perform a search with 7090xxl, and 7090 XXL just to be sure to capture all results. I didn't find any consensus, so after reading more than fishing, and wanting to fish more than experimenting, hoping to find some results faster.

I did take the rod out with a SA DT5 Ultra and while okay, a little more than I liked with the rod, so on to the 4wt trial. Mine is the older brown blank.

Would love to try one of the brown blanked ones. Among my three amber colored blanks, one is a crisp 6wt that can cast a 5 and the other two are softer 4wts that could cast a 5 at short distances but would be way overloaded with a 6.

I mostly use a 4wt cortland peach with the lighter rods but any slightly heavy 4wt that I've tried seems to work well.

First time on the water with mine it took a slight adjustment in my casting stroke.. It's been my favorite small water rod ever since.
