Anyone else notice how the Fenglass rods have really dried up of late? I'm seeing fewer and fewer of them on eBay - I can't remember the last time I saw a 7'6 5 weight offered. Last offering I remember was a 4 piece 7' 6" 6 weight. I wonder if the price will increase when one finally shows - I don't think they've gone much above 100 bucks in the past. Cheers, Alec

I'm glad I got mine. I have the 5'3", the 6', and 7 1/2'. I think the 6 ft is the most fun. Sweet, strong, but short, I use mine in my kayak and I can reach the tip top without dipping my reel in the river.

Due to the uplocking reel seats, I anticipate these will become the most sought after Fenwicks over time.

There are some vintage Fenwicks that have uplocking reel seats, but I have not seen that many. I have a 705 and an 805 that have a cork reel seat with an uplocking connection. I saw one other and I think it was an 806 on ebay, but I didn't bid it because my 805 is really a 6 wt. I am not sure what year they were made but the oldest manufacturing code I have with one of these is 1973, about when Fenwick was moving heavily into the HMG.

I just looked and here is what one of them looks like:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI ... %3AIT&rd=1

I have cast the Fenglass 866 and its a loser, and I have not heard that the 4 pc Fenglass 766 is a nicer rod than the older FF 756 which is also a 4 pc 7 1/2 ft 6 wt. Anybody know?

I bought my 6'er new last year, closing out from Bob Marriotts for $50. Happy camper.

Prices are going crazy on glass, and people are holding them for prices to keep going up. Same thing is happening with vintage fly reels.

My father-in-law has two ferruled yellow-glass Fenwicks, 7-1/2', or maybe 8'. Very good condition. I imagine he wants to sell them. I'll ask him.

I just picked up a 7'6" fenglass that a local shop still had. It's real nice. They also still have an 8"6" which I am hesitent to buy because of the bad reviews it got on this board.

I would avoid the 8'6" - plenty of us have made that mistake for you already! :rolleyes
That being said ... I really think the Fenglass has to get the award for the best deal in rods the past few years - what a shame they were discontinued. Alec

Are the Fenwick Fenglass rods significantly "better" than the earlier Ferrulite versions? Other than the cosmetics of the grip and uplocking reel seat, do they cast differently? Are they lighter or "crisper"?

The FF605 currently on eBay has been bid up to $98 (two low feedback bidders going head to head). Two Ferrulite versions of the same rod sold in the last month for about $85 each. How much of a price premium should the Fenglass receive? I must admit, I do like its looks.

well i know where 4 fenwicks are. They are in Brooklyn. i have acquired mine since November,2005. My favorite is the woodstream (7 1/2 foot 6 wt). I like the 5 wt 5'2"(535) i picked up this month ; the voyager is a 4 pc & i like it the least. If you like a im6 performance try the 756, 7' 1/2 foot. I got on the bandwagon when i read the reports here.

I have also recently aquired up my first Fenwick rods. An 807 and a 756 purchased off eBay . Today I had a chance to briefly fish the 756 at the little pond at work. I enjoyed the rod, particularly when I got myself to SLOW DOWN! The fish didn't want to play, but it was still fun. I don't often get to fish during February in Kansas!

I had the Fenglass 7 1/2 4pc 6wt and sold it because it wasn't as good as the older US made 7 1/2 footers or 7 footers in a 4pc. It is a little clunky compared to the 2pc 5wt. The 6 footer was the best of the lot.

The new 8'6" 6wt ... functional. The really old school 8'6" 6wt. 3pc. are good. Transluscent honey yellow; gold and blue reel seat; solid brown decorative wrap and came with a metal tube. Tough to find though. I had one I sold and have seller's remorse at times. I also have the older 7'6" #5 I'd be willing to sell.

The 6'er went for $152.50 with 34 bids. :eek Yikes.

The $152 was a bit rich for me, considering I don't actually NEED another fly rod. WANT, always! But I don't need another.

YIKES! was the other auction running for a 6' Fenwick fly rod, in this case an early model 305. The final price was $460!

cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7214850431&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I'm too green with regards to vintage glass to interpret such a price.

Last year a guy put a 305 up for $9.99 opening bid and there were no bites for 5 days. Seeing a good deal in the making, I went to put a minimum bid on it and it was gone. The owner had pulled the auction because it was worth more than $10 to him and there had been no bids.

Things are different now in the market, but the concept that this is the time of year to sell rods is accurate. At this time of year, I've gotten over $200 for rods that sell in other seasons for $50.

Egads ... we have been discovered!

You know, one other thing for us to remember about the Fenwick Fenglass rods. I doubt there were as many manufactured as there were vintage rods of the same size and weight. I am sure there were millions of the vintage Fenwicks produced but the retro-glass Fewick Fenglass was a flash in the pan for nostalgia and I doubt that the numbers compare. I stick by my predicition that these will be the most sought after Fenwicks (proven by recent market indicators) because they are glass, but have the modern amenities of uplocking reel seats, reverse half wells grips, modern hard alloy line guides, etc. I plan to pick up any I see under $75 as a steal.

Paveglass I agree 100 percent; that said, I think the 7.5' 5 wt. is the best of the bunch. Much more versatile than the 6'er, yet everybit as fun. I am very curious to see what the next one of those that pops up brings. Cheers, Alec

Anybody have the link to that 7 1/2 ft 5 wt fenglas with the cork reel seat? That combination of descriptors doesn't make sense to me. The Fenglas rods were made with reverse half wells grips with uplocking reel seats ... and I think the uplocking cork ones were the last of the vintage models. I'd like to look at the listing and learn from it. Thanks.

Paveglass,

The listing is cgi.ebay.com/Fenwick-Fenglass-Fly-rod-7-5-5-wt_W0QQitemZ7218827616QQcategoryZ23819QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

Like Mike, I intended to bid on this one. Somehow, time slipped by me. I guess it wasn't meant to be. Sigh.

Hello all. Haven't been around in quite a while. Thought I would tell you of my fortune found the other day.

Walked into a pawn shop and they had a brand new 7.5 foot 5 weight fenglass for sale. Plastic still on the cork and not a ding on it. The tag said $59 but I pointed out that the tip top guide was bent and might need to be replaced. $35 and it was mine. A little finger pressure and the guide was in perfect shape.

I used to have this rod but made the mistake of selling. Can't believe the fortune of finding another. They are out there but you really have to look.
