I was checking some older literature recently and came across a reference to a Fenwick FF83 in the 1969 Scientific Angler's fly line recommendations. It is described as being 8'6" long for a 4-5 line. This is one that I have not seen or heard of till now. Does anyone out there have knowledge of this rod? I am curious to learn more about it.

I think it is probably talking about the FF84. 8 1/2 ft for 5/6 wt. I have one of the very first ones with glass ferrules and the early blond glass. It is one of the few glass rods I have that are over 8 ft. Somebody may correct me but I don't think they made an FF83.

Has anybody bought the Fenwick book? If so, do you find a reference to an FF83?

The same line chart that listed the FF83 also has the FF84. The other Scientific Angler lists for the 1960's don't have the 83 so maybe it was a misprint. I am in the process of getting the new Fenwick book and perhaps the answer will be there.

Winglas,

I plan to buy that Fenwick book soon. When you get yours will you please post the letter codes for the rod production years. I believe that 1969 was "I" and you go up or down from there by letter and year but I'd like to confirm I've got it right. Thanks.

Yes, there was an FF 83. A bit lighter in action than the FF 84 and I think a little faster. It was a favorite among the real afficionados like some members of the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club. Jack Horner, the man who came up with the Humpy (known then as the Horner Deerhair) was a fan of the FF 83. Not many of them made. I don't know, but am guessing they were designed at the request of the GGACC members, who were good friends of Jimmy Green, the Fenwick design genius.
