CF,

I cast the 8' 5wt and really liked it. It was very smooth and shot line well. The rod would be very good for longer casts and wind, however, I don't think it compares to the Dglass 8' 5wt in close range. IMO, it is the nicest looking glass rod currently available on the market.

I cast it at the Fort Washington show, and I am not sure what line I was casting with.

Pete - Are the hardware and grip nicely done. or would one be better off getting a T and T cap and ring and cigar grip like on their cane (i'm told they will do that) - based on you impressions?

Creak,

Can't remember what the hardware was like but I really liked the green blank with marronish-red wraps. The cane hardeware is probably nicer though. Also, the heirloom has a reversed half-wells grip which I dislike. A cigar grip would be much nicer.

Let us know if you get the rod how you like it.

I was toying with getting an Heirloom blank. So pricey. Did you think the price justified the rod?

Scud,

To me it wouldn't be worth the money even though I really liked it. There are so many other good rods out there that can be had for much cheaper, like macfarland, steffen and dglass. However, the blanks are considerably less than the rods. If you put on cheaper hardware, it can be comparable in price to the rods I mentioned.

Pete,
Too much dilema. If I were to spring for a $300 blank, I'd have to go for the better guides, etc ... I just bought 2 blanks from Mark Steffen. 8'3" 3/4 and an 8'3" 5/6. $255 shipped. Unless I won the lottery, I couldn't bring myself to paying $300 for a single blank. By the way, Mark says that's the first 8'3" 3/4 blank he's ever built and there's a twin to it. Yes, there's a blank like it waiting for the first caller. :evil -SD

Scud,

You're going to have to post pictures and reviews on those two rods. Or else ... :evil I am really interested in hearing about the 8' 3" 6wt and the 4wt. I wonder if there is anybody else on this board that has an 8' 3" 6wt, or was that the first one he made also?

Those T&T glass rods will be showing up on eBay half-price in a couple of years anyway. I am starting to see a lot Hardy Perfections on eBay going for about $300. Still too expensive, but a little more down-to-earth.

That's right. Those are the first in both at that length. The 5/6 is crisp and the 3/4 is mellow. I'll post reports and if I borrow a camera I'll post photos as well. I'll be waiting till the grips are well soiled; likely late spring/summer. He mentioned he just got an 8'6" #4 order and now thinks it'd work well. He was hesitant about building an 8'6" 3/4 when I asked and felt the 8'3" may be a bit slow, but workable.

It's about time someone was brave enough to try those rods a few inches longer. ;) I am thinking about ordering a 5/6 steffen this summer. I 'm not sure which length I will go with though. I will probably start with the 8', and if I really like it, maybe I 'll try something a little longer.

GOOFY! :rollin Someone just paid $615 + $15 shipping for an Heirloom on Ebay! You can buy one retail, tax free and shipped free for $620. Only thing I can figure is the seller is offering a payment plan.
