A Harnell built Gadabout Gaddis 8 foot fly rod was just listed on eBay - Gaddis fly rod. It looks in nice shape. To me it's interesting from the connection to the old Flying Fisherman show.

Anyone have any idea what it is worth? For that matter, has anyone ever cast/fished any of the Harnell fly rods?

Tom

It was Gadabout Gaddis that got me started in fly fishing. I used to watch the show as a younster and once I saw them tying flies. Next thing you know I was raiding grandma's sewing basket and tying my own flies - never mind I'd never even SEEN a fly rod :rollin That was nearly 40 years ago!

I have one of the black blank Harnells. Its a 9 footer and casts a 8wt real nicely. I really like the rod. It is listed as a dry fly action, but it is really a medium progressive action.

11 hours left and still no movement ... oh gaddis, where art thou? The tension builds and speculation rules the day as we wait breathlessly ...

I have a 7.5' #5 Harnell. "Ultimate step taper", I think it is called, with black blank and red & yellow wraps.
It is a very nice casting rod. Harnell had a very good reputation among salt water fishermen in the sixties.

Sorry guys. I missed this post. I have several of the Harnell Gadabout Gaddis rods. I don't have the specific one in the auction - I've got the 7'9" model. They are decent rods but not as good as the better grade Wonderods, in my opinion. The paint on the blank does not hold up over time. I've seen a few where much of the paint has flaked off. Also the guide wraps have a minimal amount of finish on them.

They were made by Harnell in the late 1960's after the company name was sold, so they are not truly Harnell rods. I think they were actually manufactured by Horrocks-Ibbotson.

Wow that closed for a pretty high price. Looks to be in pretty good shape. If someone here was the winner, enjoy!

Holy cow, it sold for $112.51 with 23 bids. Basically, 2 guys duked it out for it after it reached $45.00 which IMHO was about the most i would have paid. Of course, i have no sentimental connection to it's namesake. Another happy eBay seller. :D
