Hmm, it's probably trick photography; maybe a weather balloon or ball lightning. :lol

When I found this rod for sale locally for $25, I let the guy know I would buy it...he responded with, "it was for sale for six months, so I finally just gave it to a friend"...

Just bought a rare Fenwick ff77-7 with E serial number. Unfortunately without original tube and sock. Will report back in a week or so when it arrives.

Nice score ZagFan...excited to see photos...rare indeed...not sure if anyone has seen the just as elusive sock and tube, so I'll share...yes, that is a seven compartment sock with a Fenwick tag....since I don't have the rod, seems like either I should buy your rod or you should buy my sock and tube :)

Yes, black anodized aluminum tube with gold colored threaded top and red plastic screw cap...this one is in remarkable condition.

Hi,
New to the forum, but thought I would share an item I won at our local fly fish banquet. At the time, I didn't know much about the FF77-7, but I have always had a fondness for fenwicks since I was little. I normally make my own flyrods in both graphite and glass, but I do like the vintage rods. This rod appears in excellent shape and I look forward to chasing goldens in the Sierra's with it.

Welcome and congratulations on that rare find.

It looks like a great backpacking rod.

That’s a cool rod!

I’m always on the lookout for unique rods like that and I’ve never seen one.

Here’s one I picked up recently, FF70-6

Coso, welcome and thanks for posting that rod. Most believe that is a very low production model. Can you tell us if there is a serial number and what letter it starts with?

Thanks, Sandman

I looked the FF77-7 up in Johnson’s Fenwick book.

It is listed in a 1967 catalog as one of three standard custom rod designs not included in normal production runs.

That was the only mention I could find in this book.

Clint, thanks for looking up that model in Johnson's book. What were the other two "standard custom" rod designs? The term "standard custom" is contradictory...maybe it means they offered a few configurations by order only.

The other two were:

FF 1200-3,12 ft, 3 pieces, 8 1/2 oz., 11-12 line

FF 112-5, 9 ft 3 in, 5 pieces, 5 1/2 oz., 9-10 line

I enjoy researching and learning.

F is also the letter on my FF70-6 serial #

Appreciate all the info. You might turn me into a collector. I have a few of my wife's grandfather's glass flyrods of a few different brands. Nothing special, but they're fairly old.

Like most, I didn't expect to come by one of these for sale. So when I did, I didn't hesitate. In all my searching, I've only seen two of these for sale, neither on Ebay. While I've only seen three or four of these in total (most in this thread, which is why I added to it), this is the first Voyager I've seen. It's a "G" series. I don’t know much about these other than they were order only through the custom shop and listed that way in a few catalogs. Not sure how many years. It is the only 5wt labeled two digit model (the early Feralite FF70 did have a No 5 sticker but most think it was a 5-6 as labeled in later years). It’s 1/2” shy of 8’ and comes in at 3.07 oz on my scale. This one has no custom name on it. Just looks like a factory Fenwick. It's seen some use, but overall in very good condition. I did use a bit of 320 on the grip. Maybe the rarest of the Fenwick's.

Haven't put a reel on it yet, but waving it across my chest, it is the most noodly Fenwick I've handled. Soft tip, soft mid and soft butt. Needless to say, deep flexing. It must be really nice for medium distance dry fly casts. I think I read once that is what they were built for. Seems like it would be fun for any size Trout. When it stops raining, I'll get out an FF75, 79, 805 and do some comparisons and report back. I will catch Trout on it this Spring.

that is terrific.. I have a 765-4 of the same vintage with a similar case and bag, one of my favorite rods. The 77 would be a perfect backpacking/high country rod.. very nice indeed, look forward to the fishing report..
