On the classic reels discussion, "reel papers" is pretty interesting, so I figure the same might be true for fiberglass rod literature--catalogs, hang tags, advertisements and such. In a habit that started about 30 years ago mostly with firearms, but some with reels and rods, I save an advertisement and/or catalog that shows the product or first got me interested, along with the literature and packaging that came with it. Some things I saved even if I didn't get the product. RL Winston had the best catalog rod descriptions going. I just hope my photos will be at least partially legible, so let's see if I can start some postings on "rod papers."

So now who's got the Phillipson or Scott stuff?

The "rod papers" discussion never caught on the way "reel papers" did, but I figure it's as good a place as any to post the Pflueger rod hang tag I just ran across. I think a few regulars here have the Pflueger rods, good as the next blue collar model, better than some. I don't have one but was rummaging reels for another purpose when I ran across an as-new in box 1494 I have but never looked over too closely. Looks like the reel is mid-'60s (no DA on the frame ring, stamped Made in AkronO USA, but 3-rivet spool and "new" style latch medallion). I'm guessing it was part of an outfit purchased as such, or perhaps individually from the same shop at the same time. The box contained the reel papers, the line label, and also the rod hang-tag which is shown below.

Fenwick, 6 weight, 8 foot. Inside cover ad, FFM, Spring, 1977. Remember, the one with a cover photo of Judge John Voelker smoking a cigar.

I have a Phillipson catalog ... I will try to get it posted. Actually I have several 1970-80s blank and finished rod catalogs I can help with including a 1980 Sage as well as Fenwick and Lamiglass literature. I have been down this road before with this site and I apologize for the lack of follow through. I will do my best to get my wife to hold my hand so I can learn how to take and post pictures here.

Cortland, FFM, January 1977. Most ads by this time were for new graphite; just a page before (these were full-size, first-few-pages ads) was SA's ad for their first System graphites. By midyear in the 1977 FFM series, Cortland's full-size ad was for the first Diamondback graphites.

I have been wanting to post that for a while, just never had the chance. It's interesting to see the custom models. FF83, FF77-7, etc.

If anyone wants to see the spinning rod, etc., pages ... let me know. -Fred

Very nice. I've never seen that list of custom Fewnick rods before. I've seen some of them show up on eBay , but I never knew when they were cataloged or sold.

I like the listing for the FF1200-3, an 8½ ounce, 12 foot, two handed salmon rod for an 11/12 line. Yowsa.

Tom- Your liking of the FF1200-3, the two handed salmon rod, reminded me of the interview with Jimmy Green by Andy Dear. Jimmy was highly regarded with the two handed rod community. His later work with rods were solid graphite two handed rods ... a very interesting interview indeed. -Fred

Fred,
I've been looking for a particular light casting rod, 6ft 2pc, for several years. I don't remember if it was still available in 70-71, but if you see it in your catalog, please post it so I can at least get the right model number.

Thanks, Fred, I'll look further back--maybe mid/late 60's. The one I had, I bought in '72, but it had been on the rack for a while, maybe longer than I realized. What a terrifically sweet rod for light lines and small topwater plugging! It was a pre-wormin' era rod with a Champion Featherweight style offset handle and Feralite ferrule. I've got a Calcutta 50B and box of 3/16 and 1/4oz plugs waiting for a mate. BTW, I had two of the rods in your catalog back then, an FF80 (8' 7wt) and a Voyager FS67-3 (5'9" 3pc UL spin), both almost sweet enough to assuage my bruised ego for losing out to a senior for the head cheerleader's affections!
