1967 Phillipson Catalog

Tom noted recently he was looking for Phillipson information. I was surprised to discover in my files I've got photocopies of four Phillipson catalogs and I think somewhere in there are two originals as well. If there is interest, I can scan and post them. Two are from the 3M era. This one is dated 1967 on the front cover, but copyrighted 1966 in the text. I assume it covered both years. Enjoy! -- Dr. Todd

1968 Phillipson Catalog

Here's the 1968 Phillipson Rod Catalog. Some changes from the previous two years, including the launch of the "Swamp Fox" line of rods. Enjoy! -- Dr. Todd

Thanks guys. I only have B&W photocopies of 1966-67, 1968, 1972 and 1973. I believe (can't find but still looking) I have originals of two earlier catalogs and those are in color. If there is sufficient interest I can post these, too.

These are great--a real treat. I hope they wind up in the "Rod Papers" section so they don't slide into the past again. They will be valuable for reference, not just on Phillipson rods, but on typical rod lengths and line weights of the fiberglass era. Thanks.

1971 Phillipson Catalog

This is the 1971 Phillipson catalog, complete. I apologize for the terrible condition of these photocopies; they are very old and made when technology was not as advanced when it comes to duplicating as it is today.

Thanks alot for posting your catalogues Dr Todd,
Believe me therre are alot of us Phillipson Hogs here that really needed them online. I have two catalogues, most likely the same as your 60s post with NS ferrules and post Johnson Profile period but pre tip over butt ferruling of the Royal Wands. Likewise yours is he first Ive seen of the Expoxites, although at this point I dont see the 6 1/2ft or 6ft rods listed. Any chance you have a post 72 catalogue or one from around 1958? I picked up an Aristo recently (Eponite 5wt DFS) and sense Ive not seen anything on this series it would be nice to learn more. Likewise I have quite a few after the move to 3M with the brown glass and spigot ferruled Epoxite line. Seeing catalogues is absolutely great, thank you again.

Yes, thank you for posting this.

I just picked up an Epoxite 8' 6wt glass ferruled blank, that I think is going to build into a real fine rod. I see in the catalog that Phillipson made the Epoxite rod and blank in a 9 1/2' 5wt ... now I'll bet that would be an interesting glass rod!

Out of curiosity, do you live in NW Montana?

This catalog was the very first year for the Epoxite line, so the rod line was very limited. The Epoxites in 1971 and 1972 were salmon colored and they aren't seen too often. That might be from a combination of four rod models and low production. Once 3M bought the company in 1973, the Epoxites became buff/tan colored and were marked 3M. The 3M rods are seen much more often.

I love the advertising prose describing the new glass ferrules with the "gold band" and the various allusions to weddings. Bill Phillipson was a master at designing and manufacturing great fly rods. Someone on his staff was a master ad writer!

I have one of the brown glass, spigot ferruled, 3M "Epoxite" rods. These rods were never cataloged by Phillipson. I think they are Fisher made rod blanks that evolved into the Scientific Angler System rods. The flex and hardware are dead ringers for the System rods. Mind you, they are very nice fly rods. SA System rods are highly sought for a good reason. Finding any Fisher glass blank is tough. But I think the brown glass rods are Epoxites by label only.

The 9'6" Epoxite is Unobtainium. I've looked for a long time and the only one to hit the market sold for a scary high price. Rick's Rods doesn't have any of the blanks in stock (I called and asked). Rick has a lot of other Phillipson materials, including other Epoxite blanks, but none of the 9'6", 5 weight. For anyone that thinks this would be an interesting fishing experience, I recommend the 9 foot, 4/5 weight South Fork Classic. I've been fishing one for a couple months now and I'm getting very, very fond of it.

1974 Phillipson Catalog

Can't sleep so I am posting the fourth Phillipson catalog, a 1974 3M Phillipson as requested. I think this is complete but can't recall if it's missing a back page, or if the back page was blank. Anyway it has 15 pages and should have 16, but that last page may not have had anything on it. Enjoy. I will try and find some more catalogs and get them uploaded next week.

I have an original of this catalog. If I can figure out what I am doing to post pictures I would be happy to post it. Also have a ton more catalogs like it including a couple of Fishers, Sage when they still sold some glass ...

I just received a brown Phillipson 3m Epoxite EF80 blank today. The blank feels very very smooth, deep progressive flexing, and has real nice power. It feels like the 6 1/2wt big brother to my McFarland 8' 5wt progressive Spruce Creek blank in many ways. I plan to build both of these blanks up this winter. Beautiful deep brown color, and a very high quality blank.

Anyway, it does appear that Phillipson has both the brown rods and blanks in the 1974 catalog that Dr. Todd posted. The write up says something like "All registered Epoxite rods are a special brown color", and they have the 3m logo on the page. Now, I don't know if the deep brown color of my blank (not reddish brown or tan at all ... more of true dark brown shade) is what is referred to as "a special brown color" in the Phillipson catalog or not. If this blank is made for Phillipson by Fisher ... cool! I like Fisher a lot, and would love to compare this Phillipson to a System 6 or System 7 rod someday. I'd also like to compare it to the "salmon" colored pre-3m Epoxite.

So many wonderous rods and blanks, so little time ...

Thanks for posting this one. It leads me to think that the 3M produced Brown Epoxite glass spigot ferruled rods were produced somewhere other than the relocated Phillipson facility after 74 when Phillipson was closed down. Tom once remarked that the brown Epoxites had a marked resemblence to the later Fisher made 3M Glass system rods. Perhaps Fisher took on the job of finishing the Phillpson assembly before taking on the job of making the SA System rods.

I finally had time to drag some 8 foot Phillipsons and Fisher based rods out in the yard with a brown glass Epoxite. Now I'm not sure who made that rod. It doesn't feel like a late model Phillipson (8' Royal Wand or an 8' Fly Fox) or like a SA System rod (System 5 and System 6). Maybe more like the Phillipsons than the SAs. I don't have an 8' Epoxite, so I couldn't compare directly. I'm sure these brown glass Epoxites have an interesting history, but I don't know if it will ever come to light.

Looking through old tackle catalogs is agreat research aid. I have a small library of 60's & 70's glass and cane catalogs. I have a Phillipson made scienticanglers 8ft 8in 8wt. this rod is suitable for chinook salmon, which I landed a couple of with it. In my area glass rods old or new don't turn up very often. This web is great everybody does a great job. I enjoyed looking at Phillipson catalogs

Flickfly,

Might we request that you scan and post a few of your glass rod catalogs?

I've been trying to figure out what year my Phillipson is from. The blank is white-painted a brown color with a little red tone to it. I wouldn't call it burgundy, but maybe someone else would. Seems too dark to be what I would call salmon. I just don't know.

It's almost the same color as my Heddon rod. I would call it more tobacco brown.

What kind of ferrule? Any distinguishing labeling?

no labels, which is what leads me to think kit rod. It has the tip over butt glass ferrule with the metal ring. Kinda copper real seat with cork insert (which looks pretty standard on Phillipsons). And it is SLOOOOW. It flexes well into the handle.
