I had the same outcome today smallie fishing, but a beautiful day and some exercise made my day.
Mike.

Always nice to get out, and maybe it’s not such a bad thing to start the month with a skunk; only way to go is up!

I went out twice, once at the pond by the house and not even a look. Then me and the grandson went to a local park lake - he caught a small gill on an ultra-lite rig, I didn't get even a nibble on my fly.

That usually happens to me at the beginning of the season. When the places you fish are naturally beautiful, sometimes fishing-not-catching isn’t so bad…

I have found that I most like to be where trout live...catching them is an extra benefit.

stripers for me are a legendary fish - I've heard about them, seen pictures, but every time I've tried it has been a picturesque skunking ;-)

Had the saltwater skunk myself yesterday at the Cape Cod Canal. Wasn’t using fiberglass but surf rods - was using 4oz jig/plastics combo for stripers and metal diamond lures and other metal for some false albacore. Did have a fiberglass 8wt in car but stayed at Canal all day.

It was a beautiful day and you never know it could have been an epic day, so you have to try and half the battle is getting there.

Wow! you can’t even get a bite in the Canal??
I’m really hoping for a late run. We have caught good fish on Halloween night.

@kimosabee - I could get skunked in a hatchery raceway, at least I feel like that sometimes here in MA. I did have a pretty good few days off in Central MA after the stocking truck made the rounds, but I don't consider our trout fishery that great in this state, except for a few well known exceptions. I should have gotten up earlier on trip to Canal and arrived well before first light, or fished overnight - that is when I have done my meager best there.

What everyone else said :)

We have stripers out here too, non-native, of course. They migrate from the California delta to the Pacific ocean. I've seen people catch them while out surf fishing, but haven't caught any myself (yet). Most often I catch surf perch, which can be a lot of fun. But I also get skunked sometimes.
