Typically, I don’t go fishing on memorial day weekend. However, I have returned to work for the first time in 4 1/2 years and I was aching to get back out on the water. And I’m not sure if it’s because of the unseasonable cold weather we’ve had in the mornings or maybe the bass are in a post to spawn funk but none of my usual flies worked today. For the first time in probably 20 years, I used Murray’s Hellgrammite. I caught 6 smallmouth and a lot of warmouth and rock bass too. As usual, the 7’6” six weight Lamiglas was a delight.

With a knee replacement, I can cover water so much more quickly. Had a run in with the local creek lifer hot head whose line I walked through and was blamed for his missing bait. But that’s kinda on me I guess. Perhaps, he should have been keeping an eye on it instead of casting a bait net. There is a reason I don’t go out on Memorial Day Weekend but sometimes you just have to fish.

Many thanks to our fallen heroes and to our Veterans.

Beautiful smallmouth, love those markings! Thanks for sharing.

I'm a big fan of Harry Murray's flies, books, and DVD. Would love to get out to his shop someday.

Stunning photo and nice fish/gear!
I picked up my first lami flyrod in the last year but havent fished it yet. A rock bass is on my new species to catch list (as well as a pickerel). Thanks for sharing!

Glad you got back out! Keep up your creek therapy and continue the good healing. Those rock bass are always a neat surprise too.

Smallies love hellgrammites! Black wooly bugger was a staple in my small mouth creek days.

Nice smallie! The creeks of SW Mo. are my stomping grounds and I love fishing for them. Glad the new knee is working out too. Both of mine were replaced 3 years ago and I have no problems and no regrets.

That's a nice smallmouth. And the 7'6" 6wt sounds like the perfect rod for that kind of day.
