I had a great morning bass fishing at one of our popular Eastern WA walleye and bass lakes. Wanted to beat the holiday weekend crowds. I took my Fenwick FF807 with Pflueger 1495 and clear intermediate line and an assortment of conehead buggers and most importantly my prescription polarized glasses. I also took my ultralight fiberglass Graywolf 5'4" spinning rod to mix things up and break in the new rod using primarily plastics. I had zero competition from the usual mega horsepower walleye and bass boats i would normally expect. All fish were caught sight fishing and put up the great fights I was hoping for. All fish released. No boat fish lunches this time. The only downside was I left the sunscreen in the truck and mother nature started calling (the bad kind) as soon as I started catching fish so I had to end the trip prematurely.

Thanks for looking!

Whoa - nice day fishing for sure. Way to beat the weekend rush and get into some beautiful fish. A 5 gallon bucket with lid can be a useful item to have - transport gear and then use it when Mother Nature calls...

Thanks guys for the kind comments. Yes it was a good trip, probably my best smallie trip ever. I discovered this particular fishery over 30 years ago and fortunately the fishery is even better now then back then with probably 50% more fish per acre than 30 years ago. Clarkman the Graywolf ultralight rod was a blast, not exactly the proper tool for the job but it worked just fine and was even more fun than the 7 wt flyrod.

Pflueger President size 20 spinning reel. Perfect match for the rod. Love these more than shimano reels.

Dang. I miss fishing for smallies. Along with bluegill, smallies have some serious shoulders too.

I used 10lb spectra with a 10# fluoro leader (overkill for the rod). Again not the ideal rod for hooksets on these fish (jerked straight back, setting the hook against the drag rather than setting hook with bent rod) but the rod worked fantastic fun once the hook was set landing the fish rather quickly.

After a day like that, I’d probably hang it up for the year. Wow.

Wow Fishhuntmike, I never realized eastern Washington had smallmouth fisheries like that. Great day huh? Enjoy it while it's producing. I'm fortunate enough to live near the lower New River and while it still has 7 lb and larger smallmouth the fishing has declined the past several years.
