Fishing a mountain Rio is my favorite way to spend a day, so I have a few lightweight rods I use depending on stream environments. However, my favorite small stream rods are a couple of Winstons...a 6'6" 3wt Glass Retro and a 6'6" 2wt IM6 model (loomis graphite). Always a fun day when I'm fishing one of these rods...

I have a 6' #2 Bamboo and a 6'-2" #2 Russ Peak Graphite marked "Zenith Fantasy" . 90% of my fishing is done with a short 2 wt. rod .

CGR 6'2" with 1774 Pflueger reel, Cabela's Prestige Plus 2wt wf floating line. I had to sand down the cork on the reel seat to fit the reel to the rod. This is a fun kit for panfish.

The smallest I have is a Sage graphite in 000, but I have not fished it in years - since I started fishing glass.

In glass, I have a 00wt Blue Heron built by Marty at Deepbend and a 0wt Ben's built by Shane of Graywolf. I have a couple of 1wt glass rods and several 2wts, with the Kabuto 6'6" 2wt being my favorite taper out of all I own.

Rio makes the 0-000wt fly line in Lightline DT. The last time I bought the 00 and 000 fly lines, I purchased 2X because you never know when these light lines will stop being produced.

Chris, do you happen to know the actual grain weight of those 00- and 000-weight lines over the first 30 feet?

Pete:

50 & 40 grains respectively.

The typical difference between fly line sizes at the middle of the range of the AFTMA range is 20 grains. However Rio took some liberties with the smaller sizes of the Lightline DT as the 2wt is 80 grains (right on the mark), the 1wt is 66 grains (a tad heavy) while the 0 is 58, the 00 is 50, and the 000 is 40.

If you follow the 20 grain difference standard, is there really such a thing as a 000 line or just heavy 0's ;)

The AFTMA has no standard for lines that small, the purpose made lines for specific light rods are no more (think Orvis & Sage and who knows what those lines weighed) so my guess it's a total crap-shoot dialing in a rod that throws that light a line with the Lightlines.

My question was asked with the desire to know the true weight of those lines, as actually weighed by someone with first-hand experience, rather than the numbers published on the Rio website for creative marketing. Dialing in the best line to use with any given rod and modern lines is a crap shoot, especially because the big manufacturers pay little attention to their own industry standards as determined by the AFFTA (formerly known as the AFTMA).

I miss the Rio Classic line, especially the Lumilux version... I didn't own a rod of any type (glass, bamboo or graphite) that didn't love it.

Nice combo!

In Bamboo my lightest line weight rod I fish is a 7ft 3pc 2wt made by Munsey followed by a 7 1/2ft 2pc 3wt based on an early Payne 100 taper by Mark Ruhe.

In glass I have a few 3wts but the rods getting the most stream time are my 7ft 3wt Ijuin and my 7 1/2ft 3wt built on a TMR blank.

Graphite: I used to have a Orvis Ultrafine that was my go to for years. Sold it years ago but I do have the 7 1/2ft 3wt Tippet but tend to reach for grass or glass for light line fishing. I would like to add a 9ft 3-4wt graphite from McFarland at some point. He made me a believer in graphite again.

I was using a noodley 2 wt glass rod, but when small stream dry fly fishing using smaller flies, any cross breeze would blow it off target. I’ve changed to a 3 wt Fenglass for my small stream fishing and find the extra line wt gives me better control of my cast and presentation. A really great rod and I wish they still made them. I’d like to get another in 4 or 5 wt.

Not fiberglass, but one of my favorite rods is a Sage 8' 0wt SPL.

In bamboo a 3-4 wgt Orvis Flea, in glass a Fenwick ff605 wrapped by Dennis Franke for himself that's a wonderful 3-4 wgt and in graphite an 8ft 9in 2wgt by Dennis Franke from his recent lightweight graphite series. Phil
