I was scrounging thru some older photos and found one of my son when he was 6 years old (he is about twice that now). His favorite color is blue and when he was 4 or 5 I bought him a cheap fly rod off the auction site that was blue as well as a very inexpensive blue fly reel and blue floating fly line. A year or two later we were at the cabin and the bluegills were hanging around under the docks and I decided to really try to teach him how to fly cast with it. It didnt take him long to figure out how to flick a fly 20 ft and begin to catch fish on his own, somewhat haphazardously. The fly I gave him was what my grandmother (whom taught me how to flyfish at 9) called the "double ugly" which was her favorite fly and looked like a larger long version of a griffiths knat. I think a "double grey" may have been another name for the fly.

And it just happened (and i didnt realize or plan for it at the time) he was wearing blue crocs, blue plaid pants and a blue shirt.

In a couple of my past posts showing my affinity towards green fly and spincasting tackle i did the same thing sort of by accident fishing for pike and that was what got me thinking about a previous situation that occurred with my son and wanted to share it!

Thanks for looking!

Mike

Great story. Keep finding opportunities for him to enjoy his blue equipment. Get him completely hooked on fly fishing now, because the fumes will kick in in the not too distance future. Exhaust fumes, perfumes......

Thanks for the kind comments. PenZzz, never heard of the "fumes" analogy pretty funny but profoundly true. Ron, great stuff with your daughters, flyrods and fish! They will cherish the memory long after we have gone.

How about red, white and blue .......

I agree with the others-enjoy it, it goes quickly. I'm a grandpa, & my kids say I'm old, but they're obviously too young to know what they're talking about!

Awesome. My dad took me and my brother fishing with spincast reels and worms, back in the 70's.

Thanks guys. Odonata, Dad started me on one of those zebco 101s if I recall. I started my son on a vintage Johnson 100b.

Fyi when I was very young I would catch blue-darner dragonflys (hint) and hold them while mom tied sewing thread between the wings and a knot on my finger and I would run around with my pet dragonfly flying above my head. They sure bite hard when you hold them wrong.
