As my wife and took our morning 4 mile walk along the river, we saw these trout stacked up gorging on a midge hatch. I went home and got my tenkara rod as I do my best nymphing with that rod. In the hour I stealthily fished from the bank I caught a lot of these trout. I don't count fish but am sure that I landed 25 that were about the size of the rainbow in my hand. I landed one after another every few casts. A great day despite the temperature being below freezing.

These were beautiful and healthy rainbows in this stretch of Gold Medal Water.

A before and after look at the #18 midge pattern I was fishing.

Sounds like an awesome day! I’ve always wanted to hit a midge hatch like you describe.

They did a number on that midge. It can be retired with honor after catching that many fish. Looks like a great time, thanks for sharing

It all makes sense for the season - thanks for posting.
On the Guadalupe tailwater, we tore them up on midges on an 18-degree morning - luckily, it warmed into the 40s.
And yes, I peel my gloves anticipating the wet.

In winter, midges are the only thing hatching, what makes the San Juan tailwater a winter destination.
Midges make up 70% of the biomass in tailwaters.

Those are nice sized fish. It certainly is nice when things all come together - you come across fish, you know what they are keying on, you have it, and you catch a number of them with it!

I went back today and some of the pod was still there. I caught many trout until my fly looked like this (still catching fish) and then we both retired with honor.

Also, after freezing my hands yesterday as bulldog alludes to, I used my Ketchum Release to free the fish allowing my hands to stay dry in the cold temperatures.

I got some great advice from MikeyB about using a Davy Knot for small flies to increase hookups and I believe it proved true. That knot is tiny but works well.

Donny, my Simms merino are still my favorite - they're supposed to stay warm when wet, but I don't find out - they go in my pockets before my hands get wet.

I'll add my neoprene Pelagic salt gloves do stay warm when they get wet.

What a great way to spend your daily walk. Did you get your 4 miles in?

In case they do get wet, I keep 2 pair of wool gloves with me.

Nice ! I like the Davy knot, too. I also like the double-Davy for tying in a tippet ring to my tapered leaders.
