Mrs Ottobahn has been my fishing buddy for over 25 years .
That’s a lot of “Sunnie” days we’ve had together.
One of my favorites was a few years back fishing at my cousin Donna Jo’s pond .
I was fishing a Shakespeare Glass Fly Rod combo and Mrs Obahn was fishing her Zebco 33 Glass/graphite composite rod.
Our son Chris took this pic of us doubled up ..
it’s the photo I keep on my phone screen .

Today the plan was to take her Daiwa Turbo combo out for a test drive and chase some Sunnies and Crick Bass.

I bought her the Turbo rod for her birthday in May but then she broke her foot real good doing CrossFit and was not able to get out fishing for most of the summer .
While recovering she said she wanted to learn how to fly fish .
She even wrote that as a life goal on a recent work leadership course .

We were both off work today and the boys were at school so we walked down to the stream to a hole we call sandy beach.

I had brought my Cabelas CGR 7.6ft 7/8wt rod to try a NOS Otto’s flyreel with some new Wright & McGill Wf8 line .

The pool looked calm with typical low late summer flow
So I decided to put the CGR in Tee’s hand

After a quick rundown/review she was fishing.

We worked on tweaking the cast ,line management, mending, and drifting.
After a supervising a few drifts I rigged up my ultralight spin rod while Mrs Obahn worked the run missing several blow ups .

I taught her to strip set along with the tip set and keep the slack out .
A few nibbles later and she scored her first fish on a Fiberglass Fly Rod .
A spunky lil Red Breasted Sunfish

Tonight at dinner she was so stoked talking to the boys about her fly fishing experience on our home stream.
Every season an angler gets that one fish that’s “special” ..in some way
Sometimes it’s not the biggest or the prettiest but it could be the stalk , the cast , the fight , the company, the hike, the paddle , the boat ride ,the scenery….
I think she found her “special” fish today .

Hope y’all get out and catch some sunnies with someone special .
Scotto

Way to go Mrs. Ottobahn! She will be out fishing you soon. The one good thing is she will have A LOT of different fiberglass rods to try out and decide which she likes best. Looks like a lovely day out Scotto.

Congrats to her on the rehab ! I broke my right calcaneus fifteen years ago, seemingly to go along with the subtalar fracture on the left almost thirty years ago.

Reminds me to dust off my collection of CGR's and fish them sometime; I like the 2wt and 7' 4/5 wt, but have caught some nice fish on the 7/8 wt as well (I have all of them).

I love this - nice to be able to the basics down and turn her loose. Rewarded with catching on first outing and a memory you will both share.

I like the CGR 7/8 for small streams with big fish.Especially streams with a lot of overhanging trees. The short length really helps.

What a fine adventure!

Take her out, tell/show her how, unleash her, and voila! And now that she caught one, she'll be hooked!

Well done, sir! Kudos to you both!

Good going. I find that a useful rod, in part because first timers seem to click with it.

Thanks for the kind replys.
I think Mrs Ottobahn stole my MOJO when she fished my CGR!
I couldn’t buy a fish for 5 days straight .
Total skunkfest !!!

Finally caught 1 bluegill before work the other day ..

while getting outfished by the River Otter and this duckling

That’s the last time she uses my rod ..
Time for her own CGR :lol
Cheers Scotto

In my experience if there's an otter around, fish are either hunkered down or in his clutches. Enjoy the rods man.

Well I’ve taken back my CGR along with my MOJO :P
She can put her own MOJO on this 8ft Graphite Wright & McGill Fly Girl rod in
Her favorite color , Purple!!

Upgraded it with a Scientific Anglers Concept2 reel along with some SA Panfish 5/6 line

Big Shout out to Goose for coming in clutch with the SA lines and Mrs Ottobahns Christmas presents….

A 7ft 5wt CGR for trout and small steam work and her very own 7.6 7wt CGR Bass rod ..

Carlz , now I need to find two more Otto’s reels for her !!

The stream is looking nice this week so we’re hoping to go fishing today if she gets off work early enough
Will report back ..
Hopefully my Mojo is intact :lol

Pretty water. I always enjoy seeing river otters, but usually it does not bode well for the actual "catching" part ... but that's not really why most of us fish anyway, when you get right down to it :)

That’s awesome man. I was gonna check in and make sure they arrived ok. The grip on the 5 wt. looks great, it was pretty crusty when I shipped it off. Caught my first trout on that rod. I know it’s in good hands.

She is well on her way to being a glass addict lol. Really like that fly girl rod. Heard the Cabelas rods were low key great rods. You beat me to that deal, I almost messaged goose when he posted them for sale. Bring her on our next micro fishing trip at the chateau, I have a sneaky suspicion she will end up with the biggest fish between us. Take us on your next trip when she fished those rods!

Well Dr Tee couldn’t get off work early all week.
She took off yesterday but it rained.. :(
Today was a beautiful fall day to get out .

water was running high and tannic so we worked on how to swing streamers ..

I was super stoked that Tee was making great mends and learned how to do some high stickin .
She already knows how to read the water and knows if it looks fishy ?? Cast to it ! ;)
Just as she was saying she doesn’t think there’s any fish in the stream she caught this huge brown maple ! :lol

We’re gonna keep at it til winter .
She says next season is gonna be her year !
Stay tuned ..

Been a minute since we last saw the new glass disciple. How is her progress going? Any new adventures? Any rods her favorite yet? Keep us posted, would love to see her story continue here.

In the immortal words of Left Kreh …
I can teach any woman to fly fish who isn’t my wife …
I think I’ve almost cracked the code :lol
Been working on those skillz … some sidearm

She finally sat down and watched the Sceintific Anglers basic fly casting video with Doug swisher .

Getting that back cast with smooth acceleration

Coming forward with some style ..

Bringing it home with the delivery..

Told her I was super proud of her sexy loops ..
She said she had been paying attention the whole time I was teaching her over the winter ..
She said she does better when it’s not 32* and bay breezy :P

AngryViking ..
I told her that it was a Phillipson rod she was using .

She said … I could tell ! ;)

She’s lovin the flyfox from your layaway collection.

Project Fly Fox FF76 heading to the top of the list …

As soon as I pay it off LOL :lol
I’m seeing some purple and black spiral wraps
in its future ..

Gonna turn her loose on the lake by work this weekend and maybe the stream by our house .

Wish us luck .

Nice. It’s been so long since my wife fished with me. I spent the entire time taking the fly out of her fishes.

Mrs Ottobahn is on the water with the Fly Fox 7.6 :P

She found a groove roll casting to a Lilly patch and caught this Lunker Bluegill on a Bett’s popper

She was super stoked putting it all together.
The cast .. the presentation.. the set … the fight to the net by herself.

Now she’s got 2 species on the fly
Red Breasted Sunfish
Northern Bluegill

Next up is going to be some Bass fishing to add on the list !

Tight lines in 23

Great BG from nice looking water. My 7' Fly Fox is my all around favorite rod.I became a much better caster after finding that rod some years ago.It really taught me how to rollcast in tight quarters.
