Autumn is in full swing and the fish are slowing down. I went to a small stream that did not require a significant hike. Fall is upon us and the aspens are in their golden splendor.

I did get some hookups with these small brookies. It amazes me that in a few months they will be covered with 8 feet of snow and still survive the winter.

This was a first cast catch, a nice brookie.

Later I moved downstream to where the feeder met the main stream, which is known as cutthroat water.

We all love brookies but these cutthroats are stunningly beautiful.

Winter is coming to the high country. Elk hunting next week. The constellation Orion is overhead.

I'm always curious what rod did you fish and what flies?

Thanks for the pics! I’m a fan of natives - nice to see you found a cutthroat to show us. I have one or maybe two more trips like this in me before ski season arrives…

I agree - native fish in their natural environments are extra special.

Excellent pictures, Donny! Were you fishing the Lamiglas 764? I fished my Lamiglas 703 this weekend and had no idea how much I liked the rod until yesterday.

Beautiful scenery (and fish)!

I have only timed a Colorado visit at peak aspen season one time and it was simply AMAZING! Pictures didn't do justice to what we saw. The fiance mentioned yesterday that she wants to go back to Colorado next year, maybe we will try to catch the aspens again.

Since the stream was so small I fished my 6 pc, 6 1/2 ft Lamiglas with a 4 wt (406) line. The Brookie was caught on a Wulff Irresistible Adams #16, and the Cutthroat on a #18 Pheasant Tail nymph. I must admit that my 7 ft Lamiglas would have been a better choice...it has a softer tip for better accuracy.

Today I did go above the trout water to about 11,500 ft looking for grouse (for friends who tie flies, of course). Flushed four but no shots.

Stunning scenery!! Wish we had more aspens in Washington. Yes Orion overhead means its "that" time of year! Enjoy your week. A couple weeks ago i spent 30 minutes looking at the Orion nebula through my 8" richfield refractor. Splendid sight. Thanks for sharing!!

Wonderful, and I should get out more this time of year, but the cricks just about shut down after Sept here.

Paveglass, thanks for the pics. Majicwrench brings up a solid point-the high country could soon find the end of fishability. Glad you were able to make the most of the (possible) end of this season. (At least in the high country).
