As a someone that's lived in Fl and S GA for my entire life, I've never really been around trout fishing. Even once I started fly fishing my focus was/is mainly for warm and saltwater. However, with a trip to the mountains planned, I thought I'd see if I could catch my first trout on the fly. I read a Bluelining 101, (a great quick read) watched the Orvis guide to small streams, got a handful of flies from Unicoi Outfitters, and got some info from the fine folks here. Definitely different from anything I've ever done, but I enjoyed the cold water and the mountains tremendously. I'll be back soon with a 3 weight.

Most of the state isn't. You can find them though.

Goose,

Congratulations on your first trout! What outfit were you using and what fly?

He's wrong. No trout in Ga. Do NOT come here to fish. Big disappointment. None in NC either. Try Tenn, Ala, SC.

All taht said, congrats, and that is a good lookin' fish even if you probably caught it in SC.

You caught me. This is in fact a SC trout.

I was using my 7’ CGR #5. A little too much rod but the length was great for the creeks.
Dry dropper stimulator with a small nymph. Couldn’t tell you the name. Basically told the dude at the shop to build me box.

That is a good rod - the 5wt will not be too much for small steam fishing. You can go lighter, but if you are only occasionally getting out for trout - then that will be a good rod to have for small stream fishing. Now if I could only follow my own advice....

Dry dropper setup is perfect - occasionally they will go for the floating fly and it may be a better option than an indicator.

Pete

My friend who began TIC in Texas (and volunteered me for the next 14 years and running) owns trout property in GA.
Though this is a Texas Guadalupe tailwater rainbow.

Sounds like you have added another exciting chapter to your own book of fishing. I do a lot of small stream fishing where a 10” trout is big. I use <7ft 3wt rods almost exclusively so you are going in the right direction with your comment of coming back with a 3wt. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Goose,
What was your impression of the Bluelining 101 book, did it go into much detail or was it pretty basic? I'm interested as I could use a little in-depth info on the technical aspects of mapping, etc.

I picked the book up in a state park gift shop. I didn't have super high expectations - but it helped a lot. well worth the $12 or so investment for a complete newbie. As a flatlander I found the section on topo map reading very helpful although I'm not sure how in-depth it is.
