Today I rode my fat tire ebike several miles into the back country then hiked down several hundred feet (Note: killer climb out) to fish a stream that had burned a few years ago and killed every trout in the drainage.

The water was clear and it was a beautiful day but I wondered if the fish were there. They were!

The trout were there and looking up. I caught rainbows and cuttbows.

They were holding in the deeper pools.

And a few were surprisingly large for the size of this small stream.

But it was beautiful water, with beautiful fish.

I have seen bears up here before and today it was clear there was one in the area.

A great day on the water.

Super cool. Thanks for sharing! I think that as long as the water runs cold and clear, trout are pretty resilient. Those are surprisingly big and healthy! Nice job catching them too. Hopper season? Or did you get the, on wooly buggers?

Beautiful location and very nice sized trout. Looks like the area and the fishery there have rebounded pretty good.

I caught them all on top with a few flies but the Amy's Ant that Robert, Mike and Aurelio introduced me too was the fly of the day. I am pretty sure that those big fish are brood stock that Fish and Game put into the stream after the fire to repopulate the stream. The sludge runoff from the fire killed all of the trout in this drainage and when it flowed down into the Animas, it killed 80% of the fish in that river also, and that is one of the stretches of Gold Medal water in Colorado.

I did make a video of the day if anyone wants to see it:

Good tip on the pattern! I’ve been using foam flies like the Amy’s Ant quite a bit this summer. They work really well. My biggest issue is matching the size of the fly to the size of the fish. Smaller headwaters fish often grab big flies but miss the hook, so setting just pops the fly free.

Looks like you didn’t have that problem…

What a nice stream, shaded here and there by the steep slopes. Beautiful.

Nice fish and stream. What kind of trail/distance does that ebike get you down?

My ebike will go about 40 miles on roads, about half that on singletrack in the mountains. My son built it for me using a motor kit from Luna and he installed it on a fat tire bike we bought. It lets me get to places I could not go otherwise. There are several on the market today but be careful to check if the pedal assist and gearing will match your physical ability and intended use. Some of them now target people who don't really want to pedal and just use them as motor scooters. The more load you carry with your legs, the farther the battery will take you.
