The Orvis flyfishing podcast with Tom Rosenbauer this week, the topic is “all about fiberglass fly rods.” The guest is Cameron Mortenson, ie, The Fiberglass Manifesto.

Just took it in this afternoon. Good interview and insight for anyone with an interest in fishing glass. One more way in which Cameron illuminates our little corner of the sport.

That podcast is good even when it's not about fiberglass fly rods.

Thanks for the heads up. That’s funny, because the most recent Fly Fishing Consultant (Rob Snowhite) podcast was on glass rods also. He did a deep dive into the nerdy stuff lol.

Haven't listened to the Fly Fishing Consultant Podcast, must check it out.

If we're discussing podcasts, the Fly Culture Podcast had a good interview with Sandy Nelson a while ago about fiberglass rods.

The Orvis Podcast is great, however it didn't sound like Tom Rosenbauer was overly enthusiastic about fiberglass rods. But cool of him to interview Cameron.

Johoh,

I thought the same thing about the Tom Rosenbauer interview with Cameron! However, Cam caught every negative nuance question from Tom and heroically turned it into a positive answer like the true statesman-ambassador for glass that he is!

I listened to the podcast as well. Tom Rosenbauer is certainly an institution as an author and fly fishing advocate. I was a little nonplussed by his approach, though. It wasn't clear to me whether Tom was serving Cameron open-ended questions to elicit basic info or whether he was being truly negative about glass.

I'm guessing that it's a bit of both. For additional context, here's an interesting article written by Tom that ostensibly describes his love affair with Bamboo. He starts out, however, with some background that includes building his own Orvis Fullflex rod from a blank in the 1970's after starting with other rods including a Wonderrod. He also describes fishing with Orvis SFG rods starting in 2018 or so. So he's not a total stranger to fiberglass the way almost anyone who started fishing after, say, 1985 might be.

Worth a read.
