Of all your rods…glass, graphite, boo…which would have to be pried from your cold dead hands?

For me…can’t decide.

Graphite: T&T 10’ 2wt Contact II
Bamboo: Sweetgrass 7’ 3/4
Glass: Undecided

My father's old early brown glass with a green Shakespeare Automatic.

He's been gone 33 years now but I can still see him watching that tip to see when he got a nibble on an egg or red worm.

Everything else is just stuff.

Graphite: My trusty 20-year-old Orvis T3 two-piece 909 Tip Flex 9.5 for saltwater.
Bamboo: Steve Pennington Pine River 704-2-2... my only bamboo rod.
Glass: Fenwick Feralite FF806... an antique that's a versatile freshwater rod I love to fish.

Top 3 contenders:

Steffen 7’6” 3/4
Steffen 8’ 5/6 (5 piece)
Larry Kenney 835 (3 piece)

If I had to choose “just one”, it would be the
Steffen 8’ 5/6

The second rod I ever built some 40 plus years ago; Orvis flea rod, bamboo, 4 wt.

Bought a kit from Orvis that consisted of the rod blank, reel seat, grip, thread and guides.

Fenwick FF 806. I could use that rod exclusively but it’s too much fun digging thru the pile to come up with a rod for the day. The amount of stuff I have is disgusting.

Glass - CBarclay 8-6, this rod is fantastic for many of the warm water streams in my area and is my go to hopper/dropper rod. It is actually a great all purpose fly rod.
Graphite - Scott G 904-2, Spring creeks, midges, baetis. Its wonderful.
Bamboo - I do not have any yet. I have tried a couple that I thought would be hard to part with. Mainly a Bill Blackburn 8' 4wt, and Reams 8'3" 5wt.

I am very blessed to have a number of rods, and parting with them is such sweet sorrow. The ones above are my go to rods and likely to not leave my collection.

I'm not sure I can limit to one. Since there's something about the rule of 3s, I'll go there.

Steffen 8' 5/6wt
Steffen 8'6" 7/8wt
Epic Bandit 7'9" 10wt

I'll play but I'm going to list them by their uses (so more than 1 per material type):

Graphite 1 - Indicator nymphing: Scott G905 2 piece rod I built from a Randy @ Retroglass blank. Its a 9' 5wt and its my go to nymphing stick for indicator nymphing which is 80% or more of my nymphing
Graphite 2 - Tight line nymphing: Scott G 7'10" 2 piece 3wt. I use this for all my tight line nymphing on small streams.
Glass 1 - delicate dries: Winston 7' 4wt Stalker. My favorite rod for dries. Honorable mention here is my FF70 D serial, its REALLY close to the Stalker.
Glass 2 - distance casting and glass indicator nymphing: Sage SFL580. I use this rod when I want to indicator nymph with glass. I also use it for large river dry work because it casts the longest of any rod I've ever held.
Bamboo: Only got 1, Mark Fitch 7.5' 4/5 wt Payne 101 taper.

The 7.5" "Golden Eagle" 6 wt. glass rod and CFO III reel that my parents gave me when I graduated from college in 1975. I have a bunch of other Orvis graphite from the mid 70's to the early 80's that I might sell but never that one.

I can’t do it, and there are a couple Of reasons for this … 1) If my wife sees this I will come home one day and only three of my rods will be left 2) I truly love them all … I might not fish them all at the same amount but when I get the urge for a rod whether an EC Crafted Glass, Fenwick or Fenglass … or my Red Truck … or Phillipson … nothing else will do! 3) Upon reflection this is a very personal question I do not think is appropriate to discuss in front of strangers … :)

I sold both my Phillipson E80 and my Cummings Water Witch when I needed to generate cash.

Both people who bought them knew I'd want them back, and I bought them both back later when they were offered.

Well dang,

Glass: 1290 Wonderod, 7'9", 6 weight. My favorite all purpose daily driver, that lives in the truck or Subaru. One of the rods Dad let me pick from the trunk of his car when I was in high school. Last rod of any type I would let go of (until my son gets it). It wears anything from a South Bend auto to a Martin to a Tioga to a Beaudex to a Johnson Century, depending on the mood and the water. I do have another 1290 as a backup, though, but it's not quite as nice.

Graphite: Orvis 9', 8 weight. I listed it since I could only list one glass rod (otherwise, my favorite 8 weight is an old glass SF Winston 8 1/2')

Bamboo: None yet. I just keep picking up glass rods and farming them out to the G-kids. :)

Walt
