I’m going to be a contrarian and say that I don’t have any rods I would never let go. I do have too many, it’s true, but I guess as Barry says it’s all just stuff…

I would have a hard time parting with my mocha Kenny 8055 (so perfect in many ways for an all around trout rod and so beautifully made). For vintage rods i wouldnt sell my "A" series FF79 or my essentially new (fished once so far '49 1290 wonderod and matching Martin 47 automatic reel). I normally use my beater copy setup.

I certainly have too many rods, and at the end of the day it is all indeed just stuff.

But I'm going to have to try a Steffen at some point :)

I have a Shakespeare FY-955 Dr. Howald Purest that I'll take with me when I go.., or maybe give to a museum of sorts. All my kids and grandkids, while they all like to fish, have no real appreciation of the old school stuff.

Easy decision for me, my Montana Brothers Rodworks 904L, which over the past 15 months has continually cemented my first impressions: This is the finest fly rod that I have cast and fished. A 9 foot 4 weight rod is what I usually end up fishing here in Northern Colorado, and this most enjoyable graphite MBR 904L handles my needs perfectly. The 904L is positive yet delicate, with a slow action that is ever so smooth. I am a tad biased towards this MBR Rod because it has the pedigree of, yet IMHO surpasses, the wonderful Paul Brown rods from the early 1980s. Paul was the finest fly caster that I have run across, and he was an invaluable Instructor for me during the years that I was Director of Fenwick’s Montana Fly Fishing Schools. And full disclosure for this post, while I had the pleasure of participating in the field testing during development of the 904L, I have no financial interest in MBR. I paid the full retail price for my 904L, and I have already ordered and paid for MBR’s upcoming 903L. Thank you for this thread!

Best, Bob

Rods that were gifts or i paid very little for from friends which i guess are gifts. All my vintage glass are production tho some are very hard to find. I am in the process of selling as many as i can and have given several away.A custom built just for me as a gift to myself would fall in that category.I love my 7' FlyFox and hope to fish it til it falls apart.Just one of those rods that catches fish whether i am fishing well or not.Just good mojo.

“Never” is definitely a long time. But, in the spirit of the question…
I can’t see ever selling my St Louis Barclay 64p. A uniquely joy-giving taper and build, even if it weren’t rare.

Bamboo: Orvis Madison 7 1/2'/ 6wt 3 7/8 oz. kit rod I built in 1972 (paired with a Pfleuger 1494 1/2 from the same year)
Glass: Fenwick FF756 I built from a blank, that rod has some magic in it
No graphite's made the cut, the only one that would have come close is a 40 year old Lami 7/3, but I broke that one at the top ferrule on a smallmouth a bunch of years ago so it's now a 6 1/2' 3wt.

I would have a hard time parting with any rod in my collection. Sentimental value would play a factor in this decision.

Graphite- 9', 6 weight St. Croix Bank Robber.
Great rod for streamers. Was my go to rod before I got into fishing glass.

Glass- 8', 4 weight green Winston Stalker.
Although this rod has some limitations, I like the slowness of the rod. Great for small flies and light tippets.

I have been paring down my rod collection, and I realized, all I need is the rod that I am fishing today. And when I'm on the water, I'm not that picky.

There are rods I would have a hard time parting with because they are sentimental or built by friends,
I have other rods that are collectors hen's teeth (the FF83 or MF80L) but all could go.

I have recently been parting with rods, so it is getting easier for me. I hope someone can use them more than I do. Most of the rods in my collection won't see the water in the next three years. It's just a numbers game, Number of rods / number of days fishing is much greater than one. I guess I have to fish more.

This is easy for me...I don't have Graphite, so I will choose 2 Fiberglass and I only have one Bamboo

Glass #1 - Phillipson X76 7 1/2 foot / 6wgt
Glass #2 - Fenwick 86 8 1/2 foot / 6 wgt
Bamboo - Phillipson Pacemaker 9 foot / 6 wgt

Not sure if I posted before, but at this point in my life the answer is easy (and hard) - there are none I would surely keep, never sell. A couple close to that, but honestly none. Vastly different take than just 5-6 years ago.

Never say never. I've had various favorites over the years because my casting style and preferences have changed. A few of my favorites:
Steffen glass 8' 5/6wt 3pc
Orvis SFGlass 7'6" 4wt 3pc
Winston B2x 8'6" 3wt
Winston B2t 8'6" 4wt (staff of Moses)
I have others that are great rods and will be hard to part with eventually:
Kabuto glass 7'6" both 4 and 5wts
SA System 5 glass 7'7" 5wt
Heddon bamboo Black Beauty 8' 5wt 1 3/4F
And more . . . . . Do I have a problem??

Judging from my long history of saying to myself "I will never ever sell this rod" and turn around a year later and find the next "best" fly rod funded by the pervious years "best" I will have to agree with Bob G. The MBR 904L is the finest fly rod I have ever owned. I am ashamed to say that is an awfully lot of rods over 40 years.

Duff, you're batting .429, not too shabby for the majors! :)
