Duff,

I was expecting a lot more turnover from you. You need to go on a glass binge.
You've had enough bamboo for now.

Jhusky, I was going to correct your math until I realized Duffs original list was misnumberd.

Yep, the double 3.'s threw me at first - none of Duff's rods don't deserve a number of their own, for sure.

graphite: Winston WT 7.5' 4wt and Sage Z-axis 9' 5 wt - both at the top of the list for their specific purposes.
Glass: Steffen 8' 3/4
Bamboo - Orvis "99" 7' fishes a 5 wt. (but a T. Zietak Para 15 clone blank is in my basement and it may become top dog here).

Lately, I’ve been thinking about selling some rods. This thread is wonderfully therapeutic for me. Helpful to be in the good company of other junkies!

I’m still in the addition mode. Trying to slow down my acquisition roll, but the amount of cool stuff to discover and learn just through this group alone is daunting.

I will say the rods with personal connections to the maker or connections to the previous owner are closer to my heart, and most of that category tend to be my favorites to fish also. That’s an interesting phenomenon I need to ponder further.

I only have one rod that I can't see me ever getting rid of. It's my SA system 7 which was a 20th anniversary gift from my wife and quite possibly the best looking factory rod ever produced.

Every time I say I have a rod I'll never sell, well, I end up selling it. LOL

Fiberglass: Barclay 70p. So perfect for the small creeks I fish in the Crested Butte area. Feel lucky to have found one to buy and will hopefully pass it on to my sons. My 75p is also on the list of one I will never sell. My most fished rod since I live in Texas and it’s perfect for our small waters and the small poppers/Streamers I usually fish.

Bamboo: Paul Young built Perfectionist. Only rod I like casting more than the 70p.

Native Custom, 7ft 3wt. Maybe 30 years old or more. Built by Barry Bono (I was informed on this forum) now deceased.

My journey has always been about taper. Along the way I have amassed a collection of vintage and custom rods from Peak, Cummings, Kenney, early Scott and Winston… many obtained from you wonderful people on this forum, thank you.

That being said, there are three tapers that I have really come to love and could happily fish the rest of my life, covering nearly all TROUT conditions. I am not sure of any of the builders as they are all custom builds (not commissioned by me), with perhaps an exception on the last one.

James Green black blank 8’ 4wt, but is so soft it handles a 3wt just as well.

Mike McFarland black blank 8’8” 4wt, magical

********* rod co root beer blank 8’9” 5wt, so smooth

Vintage - L. Chandler signed Cortland 7.5' 6-7 wt - sentimental value, great with heavy streamers
Modern - CBarclay 64p - casts like a laser, had one but lost it but then a second one came as a great gift from a great friend!

Graphite: Fly Logic FLP+ 904/3; 9'-4wt-3pc. (2001)
Glass: Garcia 2404T; 8'-6wt.-2pc. (1971) or Fenwick FF75-4 Voyager; 8'6"-5wt. 4pc. (1967)
Bamboo: Old Faithful True Action (Wright & McGill), 9'-5wt.-3 pc. (1950)

I don't fish the bamboo very much, but it has sentimental value. I use the Garcia and Fenwick on small streams here in Michigan. For destinations that require travel by air I use the Fly Logic 4wt. or a newer TFO LK Legacy in 4wt.

All mine are for sale but the prices on most of them are way above reasonable market rates, but they’re available to a highly motivated buyer…except maybe my rod from my high school years, a Fenwick FF 84, at my age, it may be the last rod I fish with.

Happy to get back over here and find this thread here in the new year. Just reading it made me feel a bit better about myself. I certainly sell gear to fund new gear, and I’ve sold some “never sell” rods and reels. Normally when that happens I’ve found a new fling and the gear that gets sold has a $ value that makes it hard to keep. I also like the hunt and keeping fun money loaded takes some selling (for me). I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of fine tools instead of a collector of things and things that don’t work don’t stay long at my house…a big reason a perfectly wonderful rod may get sold to someone to use as intended.

I will answer the question as my custom “Team Red Ass” 888 Epic is the top for the glass category. Carbon gets tricky, but I’d say my 1 pc Loomis CC Pro in a 7wt. I adore all of my 1 pc rods from Loomis and Hardy. My 4pc factory offerings are great, but are cannon fodder when I see something shiny.

about reels tho…

4 that I would not part with, both are great tapers and it would be tough to replace both:
Claudio 856 I got the blank years back from Randy Johnson (retroglass)
Natural 844-3 Shane sold me a blank that he had painted brown, very similar in color to the CTS Tea color.
Steffen 7-9 4/5 2pc, while I like my own 7-9 length tapers a bit more, this one would be hard to part with, one of the last Mark and Tim rolled in this configuration.
Diamondglass 804-2 Original Vermont rolled blank.

I have never sold a fishing rod of any type. So the short answer is all of them. Even the ones that rarely get fished were acquired because I wanted it for some known or unknown reason.
I never considered that collecting meant also selling . It seems to complicated to me and would interfere with my fishing and learning about the history of the ones I have.
