Takeru,
do you ever have the opportunity to go fishing for Iwana? What is that like? Are they hard to find? Do they have any interesting behaviors, like being known for liking certain types of flies? Their close relative the brook trout is the native trout near my home in the southeastern US, but you have to go to certain high mountain streams to find them. People are often cryptic and secretive about where to find brook trout. In some parts of the USA they are common and can even be found at lower elevation, in other places they are considered a pest! In the east they are cherished and fairly rare.

BrookieBoy,

Gogi, a subspecies of Iwana, also lives in the area where I live. I haven't been fishing for Gogi yet this year, but I'm planning to enjoy it with my friends. Hiroshima, where I live, is located relatively south of Japan, so we need to reach a high mountain stream to fish Gogi. Iwana, including Gogi, are said to be less selective for flies. I mainly use form flies around #10 because I enjoy Gogi fishing during early summer to summer when telestrial patterns are effective. In Hiroshima, Gogi, like Brook trout, is often cryptic and secretive. On the other hand, in areas located in the north of Japan, such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, Iwana and subspecies of Iwana are common, so they are not so important, and Yamame are more important.

The URL of the Gogi Fishing reports that I have posted on this forum are shown below.

Stunning streams and fish. Japan has some of the most beautiful streams I’ve seen and I hope to fish there someday.

I hope that overseas travel will return to normal as soon as possible.

I was going to order another rod from him as well and was surprised and saddened by his sudden retirement...

Wonderful photos of beautiful streams and magical fish! Bjarne Fries rods are not often seen, especially in the US. Lovely to see yours “properly” fished with Bjarne’s favorite Purist reel—a perfect match!

Beautiful pictures. I visited Japan a long time ago and was impressed by the beauty there. The mountain streams looked so pretty. I kept thinking there must be some trout or some other unique Japanese fish living there. I always swore if I ever came back I would try fishing, unfortunately that never happened.

I am glad to hear that this stream of my favorites is also attractive to guys. Now waiting for trout fishing to resume in April. Looking at these pictures makes me itchy to meet the beautiful scenery and trout again.
